So, what is it that you don't understand about working with ratios?

First you should divide your total amount (£40) by the total number of 'parts' (4+5 = 9), which is £4.44. You can call this one 'unit'. Now multiply this 'unit' by each part of the ratio - first £4.44 * 4 = £17.77 , and then £4.44 * 5 = £22.22. Therefore £40 in the ratio of 4:5 is £17.77:£22.22

first add up your ratios: (4+5=9), then divide your money by this number (40/9=4.44) and finally times by each ratio: (4.44 x 4, 4.44 x 5= £17.78 : £22.22)

Let me start with a example, lets say you have 5 pens and you are giving them to two of your friends 2& 3 respectively .it means that you are dividing your 5 in the ration of 2:3.

so add 4+5 =9 so first you divide your total amount into 9 parts then you will how much is each part, for that do,40/9=4.44.so you that each part is 4.44.the question is to divide them into 4& 5 parts so do 4x4.44 and 5x4.44 which gives £17.78 and £22.22.therefore you divide your total amount 40 into £17.78 and £22.22.Always at the end to check your answers add the parts it should give you back your total amount 17.78+22.22=40.so thats perfect!
