About Rachael
I am a BA English Literature graduate from a Russell Group university.
While at Exeter University, I studied modules in Medieval Literature, Renaissance Drama, The Evolution of the Novel, Romanticism, Prosody, and Creative Writing. My final dissertation received a first.
Having worked as a language assistant at a residential school prior to studying , I began tutoring online during my BA degree in 2018 on sites such as MyTutor.
I now have five years of online tutoring experience and 1000+ teaching hours as of July 2023. It's been incredibly rewarding and equally eye-opening, shedding light on just how much students have suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic and from an education system that prioritises arbitrary goal-setting over teachers' mental health.
I am an empathetic and observant person, able to offer a safe space for students to gain confidence in their studies, targeting skills such as unseen poetry analysis and essay writing, which are frequently undertaught in schools.

What can you expect from my tutorials?
I aim for an exploratory tutorial that balances exam technique (if applicable) with a more creative discussion of literary concepts, cultural context, and interpretation of themes.
My teaching style is influenced by historicist theory. This means I encourage students to delve into the cultural/historical context of their studied work. This brings the text to life and allows the student to fully understand its place in the world. We might discuss the relationship between Elizabethan music and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or consider the experiments of Luigi Galvani alongside our reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. This historicist approach has resulted in some really exciting essays from previous pupils, which have stood out of the crowd.
Where appropriate, I will also set independent research and essay tasks as homework. This helps me monitor progress.
What qualifications do I hold?
- An Enhanced DBS Check as of 2023
- A First-Class Hons BA in English Literature with Proficiency in German from the University of Exeter.
- (Distinction) Diploma in Self-Publishing from The Centre of Excellence
- Completed Prevent Training (safeguarding) with MyTutor

Really helped me with my GCSE English Lit, from a 7 to an 8 within a couple lessons. The lessons were interactive and conversational, so much so that they are enjoyable.
I have been taught by Rachel through My Tutor and she’s helped me get from grades 5 in both gcse english literature and language to a grade 7 and 8. She helped me target the spots I was most weak at and helped me improve on these areas.
