About Mariya

I am a PhD student in Cryptography at the University of Bristol. I am keen to help bright students reach their full potential and fulfil their goals in my free time.

I graduated with a first class degree in MEng Computer Science from the University of Bristol in 2017. During my degree I further developed my knowledge in Mathematics and Computer Science, covering a variety of topics such as security, computer vision and data science. I also worked on various paired and group projects, Together with a team of 7, I also created a VR game as part of my third year project. My summers I spent doing internships in Android development and research.

In addition to mathematics and computer science knowledge and qualifications, I have a number of qualifications in English, including FCE and CAE. I also sat the IELTS exam in September 2012 and passed with an overall score of 8.0 (Listening - 9.0, Reading 9.0, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.5).

I have always had an interest in teaching. Hence, when I started university, I looked into ways I could put this passion of mine into practice. I joined the outreach programme of my department and through that I have been part of Digimakers - (concealed information) - since June 2015. I have since developed and led maths and computing workshops for students of various ages and backgrounds. I have also been involved in other teaching events such as Work Experience Week and various events aimed at girls who have an interest in pursuing a STEM discipline.

Additionally, I have been a teaching assistant for various units of the Computer Science course at the University of Bristol since September 2016. My main responsibilities include supporting students with programming languages and tools, and leading them through the theoretical and practical challenges of various areas in computer science. I was involved in making changes to a unit based on feedback from students. I have also marked various assignments.

I believe every student has a different approach to studying and understanding new concepts. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to figure those out and adapt my teaching style to the student. I hence tend to gauge the student's background knowledge. For example, when going through a mock exam or a past paper with a student, I first ask which questions they need help with. From there I try to slowly unpack the question - is it the application of a certain concept that is confusing them or do they need to learn the basics first. I then proceed appropriately and try to explain whatever is causing confusion in a way that would be appropriate for the student in question. This has proven successful with students of various ages and backgrounds.
