How do You Find 1% of a Number?

Calculating Percentages

Calculating percentages is one of the most important mathematical skills you can carry with you throughout your life and luckily it is very simple to master. To find a percentage of any number, all you have to think about is diving that number up into 100 equal pieces and then adding together the number of pieces you wish to calculate. If you want to find 1%, you just need to divide your original number by 100 and you're done. Now, this is easy with multiples of 100 like 500. Splitting this into 100 pieces gives you 100 5s. If you want 10% of 500 you just do 10 x 5 and you've got your answer 50. But what if we are using a more complicated number like 27?  Well you do the same thing. Divide 27 into 100 equal pieces and times by the percentage you wish to find? To divide any number by 100 all you have to do is move the digits 2 places to the right of the decimal point. When we say 27, what we are really saying is 27.0. So dividing this by 100 will move the numbers 2 places to the right, so 0.27. This is one hundredth, or, 1% of 27. To find 1% of any number, all you have to do is move the numbers 2 places to the right. 1% of 270.0 is 2.70. 1% of 2547.0 is 25.470. It's that simple. This is the same as multiplying any number by 0.01. 27 x 0.01 = 0.27. 2547 x 0.01 = 25.47. If you have a calculator this is how you would find 1%.
