Using a calculator: 650,000 x 78/100 = 507

You might also like to try it by breaking it down into easy chunks, so 78%= 50% (half) plus 10% plus 10% plus 10% take away 1% and 1%.

So lets run through the maths: 50% of 650,000 is 325,000. 10% is £65,000 and 1% is 6,500.

So its 325,000 plus 65,000 x 3 (=195,000) less 6,500 x 2 (13,000). This gives you an answer of 507,000.

Using the calculator gives us 507,000 as well.

There will be other ways of doing it as well, but I hope this helps.

Using the building block method we can split 78% into a 50%, a 25% and 3 lots of 1%.

50% of 650,000 is 325000.
18 August 2011
25% of 650,000 is 162,500
18 August 2011
1% of 650,000 is 6,500 so 3% is 19,500.
18 August 2011
Now do 325,000 + 162,500 + 19,500 = 507,000. This method of working out a percentage of something is great to use in non-calculator exams.
