About Richard
A Masters Graduate with degrees from The University of Manchester and Goldsmiths, I have been teaching Secondary English for the last 3 years. Predominantly working in schools that have been struggling, I am adept at pin-pointing the individual needs of a student and providing support for them in developing the required skills and knowledge.
Creative, approachable yet rigorously academic, whether you are in Year 7,8,9,10, 11 and 12 and need help getting caught up after quarantine, or you want to stretch yourself and get prepared for University, I will provide support and encouragement to get you where you need to be.
I am a published writer, who has had an extensive career in art galleries and publishing before coming into teaching and so can provide a realistically focussed and professional perspective that will ensure your success.

I was Richards Development Lead as he worked through the Teach First program, working towards his PGDE. Over this time I have seen him delivered many excellent lessons where all pupils were engaged and made progress.
Richard completed the Teach First program in a challenging school and has worked very hard to develop his teaching so that all pupils in his lessons are able to make progress, while maintaining high expectations of all pupils and encouraging them to do the best they can. As you can imagine the Teach First program is an extremely challenging way to enter the profession of teaching, but Richard rose to every challenge that has been placed in front of him and I have been very impressed how he has managed to stay positive all the way through the process.
Richard is always keen to improve his practice and is very responsive to all feedback. After every observation he fully engages in the feedback process and works to develop any areas of development that have been identified during the observation
While on the Teach First program, Richard has looked at many of the potential barriers to learning that can stop pupils from engaging and making progress in school, in his 4 assignments he has planned interventions based on the latest academic research, then carried out these interventions and critically evaluated their impact on pupils. The ideas he developed for his interventions have now become part of his everyday practice.
Throughout Richards time on the Teach First program he has show a passion for reducing educational inequality and through his classroom teaching, interventions and work with all pupils has strived to develop the ability to be able to have an impact on this where ever he works. Richard is also very passionate about his subject and the opportunities this can give his pupils. Richard looks to use every opportunity to enrich pupils understanding and pass on his passion for English as a subject. This can be seen in the extra work Richard is doing supporting the teaching of KS5 English
As a result of working with Richard and watching his development over the past 2 years I have no hesitation in saying that Richard would be a valued member of any English department and school.Richard is an excellent teacher of both English Language and Literature. He has very good knowledge of both Key Stage 3 and the GCSE curriculum and can teach English creatively to a wide age range. His professional relationship with pupils is strong, building their confidence to ensure they maximise their potential. Thoughtful, supportive and clear academic guidance are the trademarks of his teaching approrach.
