The House of Windsor Family Tree at a Glance

This line of succession to the British throne is clear, running straight from Queen Elizabeth II through three generations, emphasising the firstborn position. This chart presents the House of Windsor family tree.

A graph of the British royal family, showing three generations of royals in green, and their spouses in blue.

This chart doesn't feature the extended royal family: Queen Elizabeth's other three children, their spouses and their descendants. They matter too, as they play a role in today's monarchy. Some, such as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, are also in the line of succession (9th and 12th, respectively).

Still, this simplified graph is a good starting point for our exploration. It gives us an idea of who's who among British royals in the immediate line of succession.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip: The House of Windsor and Today's Royal Family

Explaining the House of Windsor

'House' refers to the royal family's bloodline.
King George VI chose the House of Windsor name during the First World War to distance the British royal family from its connection to the German House of Saxe-Coburg Gotha.

The House of Windsor has been ruling Britain since 1917. Queen Elizabeth II became the third monarch of this house, succeeding her father to the throne after his shocking, untimely death1. At just 26 years old, she was a mother of two children by the time she ascended to the throne.

Dealing with her beloved father's death while managing her young family must have been overwhelming at times. Adding the weight of the entire British state was a challenge she rose to with grace and fortitude. But she didn't do everything all alone.

He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years...

Queen Elizabeth II, on her husband.

By her own testimony, Prince Philip was with her every step of the way2. Like every working royal before him, he took on royal duties alongside his roles as a father and husband. When not attending to matters of the Crown, the pair delighted in their growing family.

  • Prince Charles Born 1948
  • Princess Anne born 1950
  • (former Prince) Andrew born 1960
  • Prince Edward born 1964

These are the royals who are carrying the monarchy forward. Through their own deeds and their descendants, they leave their mark on British history, culture, and society.

King Charles III Family Tree

As Queen Elizabeth II's firstborn son, King Charles was the heir apparent to the throne for most of his life. In fact, with nearly 71 years in that role4, he's the longest-serving heir apparent in British royal history. He married relatively late by royalty standards of the day. This timeline shows how he prepared the monarchy for its future rulers.

July 1981

Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer marry

June 1982

The couple and the world welcome Prince William.

September 1984

The couple and the world welcome Prince Harry.

December 1992

Prince Charles and Princess Diana separate.

The princes stayed mostly with their mother, who had apartments at Kensington Palace.

August 1996

Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorce finalised.

The princes were away at school.

April 2005

Prince Charles marries Camilla Parker-Bowles (now Queen Camilla).

This timeline makes clear the royal influence on the princes' lives. Traditionally, royal children's education entails boarding schools, especially at the upper levels. The princes attended Eton College, the same school as their father. Today's heir apparent to the throne, Prince George, took his place at Eton just this year.

Let's go

Prince William, Catherine, and Their Children

The UK is a constitutional monarchy, meaning that the political class - Parliament, makes laws that shape the monarchy. The latest revision to those laws, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 (enacted in 2015) states that a monarch's firstborn child is the heir apparent to the throne.

track_changes
Why this change matters

Earlier acts barred girls from becoming heir apparent, even if they were born before sons.
It also kept girls from the throne if there was a male heir further in the bloodline, regardless of their position in the family.

This change doesn't matter to Prince William; he's male and firstborn. He married Princess Catherine (Kate Middleton) in April 2011, when he was 28 years old. Much to the world's delight, this glamorous young couple soon presented three heirs to the throne.

Prince George

  • born 2013
  • 2nd in line to the throne

Princess Charlotte

  • born 2015
  • 3rd in line to the throne

Prince Louis

  • born 2018
  • 4th in line to the throne.

The updated laws have a substantial impact on Princess Charlotte who, under the old standard, would have been bypassed in favour of her younger brother. They also matter to the rest of the family members in the line for the throne.

All the emphasis is on the firstborn, male or female, and that emphasis continues to the next generation. Thus, the children of the firstborn take precedence over every other person in the line of succession.

Prince Harry, Meghan, and Their Children

For most of his life, Prince Harry stood 3rd in line to the throne, behind his father and brother. However, the arrival of his brother's children put him 6th in the line of succession - now 5th, since the Queen's passing.

Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in May 2018. Their son, Prince Archie of Sussex, was born a year later, in May 2019, shortly followed by his sister, Princess Lilibet of Sussex, in June 2021.

Prince Archie stands 6th in line to the throne, followed by his sister, Princess Lilibet, who's is seventh in line.

The 1917 Letters Patent, issued by King George V, limits the giving of titles. Grandchildren of the heir apparent are automatically princes and princesses; the monarch's great-grandchildren are not5. Archie and Lilibet were not legally allowed titles while the queen ruled. Now that their grandfather, King Charles, occupies the throne, their status has been updated.

Prince and Princess?

Neither Archie nor Lilibet were born with royal titles. They were accorded those royal titles, when their grandfather, King Charles III, acceded to the throne in 2022.

Despite not being working royals, Prince Harry retains his royal designation, and both he and his wife remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Legally, His/Her Royal Highness (HRH) remains a part of their formal identity. However, they agreed not to use HRH in any sense after their split from the monarchy.

Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and the Extended Royal Family

Though much of the focus is on King Charles, his siblings take on substantial royal duties, particularly Princess Anne and Prince Edward.

Princess Anne's royal duties

  • Counsellor of State, a top advisor to the king
  • Gold-Stick-in-Waiting, responsible for the monarch's safety
  • Senior Colonel, overseeing military tradition
  • Charity patron, overseeing 300+ patronages

Prince Edward's royal duties

  • Councillor of State and Regent, a 'deputy monarch' for when the king is away
  • Chairman of the Trustees for youth development
  • Production Guild of Great Britain patron, promoting diversity in the arts
  • Commonwealth Games Federation vice-patron, supporting sports

Both have full schedules of engagements in Britain and abroad, but Princess Anne is regarded as the hardest-working royal3. Though not in the line of succession to the throne, she wields substantial influence on the direction the monarchy takes.

question_answer
What about Andrew?

King Charles stripped Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of his titles in October 2025.

Despite the monarchy distancing itself from Andrew, he still holds an important place in the royal family. He's 8th in line for the throne, and his daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, are in 9th and 12th place, respectively. And we've yet more relevant royal names to connect.

Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, firstborn daughter of Princess Beatrice: born September 2021; King Charles' great-niece; no royal title; 10th in line to the throne, to succeed her mother.
Athena Elizabeth Rose, daughter of Princess Beatrice: born January 2025; King Charles' youngest great-niece; no royal title; 11th in line to the throne.
James Mountbatten-Windsor, firstborn son of Prince Edward; born December 2007; King Charles' youngest nephew; styled as Earl of Wessex after his father's title; 17th in line to the throne.
Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, daughter of Prince Edward: born November 2003; King Charles' youngest niece; born a princess but styled as 'Lady' for privacy reasons; 18th in line to the throne.
Peter Phillips, son of Princess Anne: born November 1977; King Charles' oldest nephew; no royal title; 19th in line to the throne.
Zara Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne: born May 1981; King Charles' oldest niece; no royal title; 23rd in line to the throne.

Is the House of Windsor Family Tree the Same as the Line of Succession?

Only a part of the House of Windsor family tree represents the line of succession; not everyone with a royal title stands on that line. The distinction between the two is crucial.

The line of succession

The legal order of eligible royals in line to the throne.

The family tree

Everyone born of the royal bloodline, even if they're not in line to the throne.

Technically, every royal family member could inherit the crown. However, the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 makes it clear that the 'firstborn line' takes precedence over every other royal. So, the line of succession runs from King Charles to his eldest son, who will pass the crown to his eldest son, and so on.

As this line populates the succession list, so does the rest of the royal family adorn the family tree. For instance, Princess Charlotte, currently 4th in line to the throne, may never ascend. However, she may marry and have children who will populate a new branch of the family tree.
