Well, you could start by thinking about the advantages that a migrant surgeon may bring to a country

So how about badly needed skills and knowledge
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
better tactics?
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
going to an area where it's difficult to find a surgeon, and yes they may have different skills not available in the UK
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
They may have unique specialisms too
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
What else do you think a surgeon might bring?
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
not sure.. let me think...
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
How about a different outlook on life, from the point of view of their culture
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
i mean like a migrant in general though not just a surgeon
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
Well, think about someone who was unskilled, what benefits might they bring?
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
higher population?
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
better health care, more specialized
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
Think about specific examples, e.g. a chef or an engineer...
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
thing like that??
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
Yes, there might be a higher population - and maybe greater healthcare or education costs - so maybe this is an example of a disadvantage
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
You are right when you say that a migrant could improve healthcare too
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
what do you mean about the education costs? they are more specialized so they'll charhge more?
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
When people talk about disadvantages, they think about things that are scarce, e.g. housing
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
Things that are in short supply, can come with extra costs. So a migrant using the health service may mean the economy has to spend more on medicine, or on school books
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
it might raise up some rejections of the laws among the migrants... It can lead to some problems...(what about that?)
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
But what about the tax they pay on the money they earn? Will this offset the extra costs?
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
Well, when migrants enter a country they are expected to abide by its laws. If they don't there could be problems, but that goes for everyone else too.

geography is not one of my specialist subjects but i would have to say migrants provide cheap labour and will do the jobs that some of the home citizens may not want to do e.g. cleaning. They also introduce new cultures into a country which can change some peoples outlook on life

As for disadvantages, it is known that migrants can bring diseases to countries where there are medically sound environments. Migrants also tend to send their money back home to their own families which means it is not invested in the host country. Another disadvantage is that they take some jobs away from the home citizens which leaves them discriminated against
javaid.aslam
04 April 2011
against what?
kiwiapple

kiwiapple
04 April 2011
what is it discrimated against
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
Good one, any more?
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
Discrimination is the unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
so what is the finished sentence? discrimated against what??
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
Maybe people fearing that they may lose their jobs leads to prejudice and discrimination - think about it
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
Anyway, how many more ideas do you need - and what ideas do you have?
jon.ellis
04 April 2011
not anymore, just need that sentence finished
kiwiapple
04 April 2011
All done then?

The important thing is that you understand how to answer a question like this. Hopefully you have picked up some good ideas.
