Hyrox burst onto the fitness scene in 2017, a unique, standardised race that blends running and workout stations. In that short time, it has become a global sensation, with competitions held around the world from September to June - the Hyrox season. Cardiffians are keen Hyrox participants; last year, the city hosted Hyrox's first-ever arena event. For anyone seeking their Hyrox club Cardiff, this page is for you.

What Is Hyrox?

Hyrox is a global fitness initiative that blends running with circuit training. This concept is the brainchild of a former Olympic field hockey champion and his friend. Bored with the standard, bland workout, they wanted to inject a competitive element into their fitness routines1.

Moritz Fürste and Christian Toetzte debuted their 'anti-workout' initiative in 2017. Apparently, it was just what the world was waiting for. The first Hyrox event, in Hamburg, put 650 athletes through their paces. Participant numbers have grown exponentially since then.

accessibility
The largest Hyrox event

Last year's London Hyrox event was the largest in the race's history.
It counted over 40,000 participants and more than 30,000 spectators.

As you might guess, London Hyrox facilities are particularly well attended, but Cardiff Hyrox clubs have no reason for shame. We'll dive deep into them in a mo; for now, let's go over what, exactly, constitutes a Hyrox race.

8️⃣ It's an eight-kilometre footrace, broken into 1 km segments.
🏋️‍♀️ After each 1 km stretch, athletes head to a station to work a specific piece of exercise equipment.
🏃‍♂️ Once they complete that station, they rejoin the footrace.
🔁 The cycle repeats until all eight station workouts are complete and the full 8 km are run.

Hyrox events are unique, both in their structure and setup. These races are indoors, so athletes don't need to worry about getting rained on (or the event getting rained out) or dressing for the weather. Everyone may run at their own pace; they are not held to a clock, though tarrying along at any part of the course will cost them time.

Hyrox events do not prioritise elite athletes over otherwise fit enthusiasts. However, Hyrox event participants are organised into divisions. 'Open' athletes are casual fitness enthusiasts who wish to test their mettle, while 'Adaptive' athletes compete with some level of disability. Hyrox does feature an 'Elite' division, but it doesn't participate in every event.

Hyrox in Cardiff

Last year, Cardiff hosted its first-ever Hyrox event. It marked another first for the Hyrox race; it was the first-ever event hosted in an arena. Holding these races inside massive halls is the standard; for instance, Manchester's Central Convention Complex hosts that city's Hyrox events.

Cardiff's debut Hyrox race delivered the city a substantial economic boost2. Principality Stadium, where the event took place, is already familiar to the athletic community because it is home to the Wales National Rugby Team. It has the room to accommodate thousands of visitors and athletes, and the shops and restaurants in the vicinity do, too.

Hyrox impact on the community

Last year's event created a new community of Hyrox enthusiasts.
It meshes perfectly with Cardiff's warm, friendly vibes and vibrant fitness community.

As I write this, Cardiff's next Hyrox event is mere days away. Once again, Principality Stadium is gearing up for the thousands of participants and spectators to fill its spaces. Perhaps those onlookers might decide to become Hyrox competitors themselves. And the athletes are training more intensely, likely at one of these clubs.

Top Hyrox Club Cardiff: Dragon Athletic

... to shape the health and well-being of the community.

From Dragon Athletic's mission statement.

After last year's Hyrox event, Dragon Athletic became Cardiff's centre for all things Hyrox - above all, the Hyrox community3. Here, you'll find supportive, motivating, like-minded fitness enthusiasts ready to help power you through your Hyrox journey.

Dragon was Cardiff's original CrossFit connection, and it still bills itself primarily as a CrossFit gym. Its class timetable lists more CF classes and sessions than Hyrox ones. But give it time; as Hyrox continues to surge through the city's fitness community, the schedule will likely contain more Hyrox openings.

CrossFit Cardiff

Granted, CrossFit and Hyrox are miles apart in intent and practice.

Hyrox competitions happen all over the world. Photo by Mathieu Improvisato

CrossFit is a training methodology that offers elite CrossFit athletes occasional competitions.

By contrast, Hyrox is a standardised competition that's open to everyone and takes place year-round all around the world. To wit, Birmingham Hyrox athletes will have an event in their city later this year.

But that doesn't mean that CrossFit athletes disdain Hyrox. In fact, after last year's expansive Hyrox Cardiff event, this club went out of its way to welcome Hyrox enthusiasts.

warning
To be sure

CrossFit Cardiff is not a Hyrox club.
However, you will find most of the equipment you need to train for your Hyrox competition, including vertical SkiErgs, rowing machines, sleds, and kettlebells.

Finding a Hyrox coach or class on-site might be more of a challenge, though. But you might not need one if you're familiar with the Hyrox format, and only need a facility near you to train in.

You could bring your own Superprof personal trainer, or have them meet you there. Superprof has five Hyrox fitness trainers in Cardiff, ready to help you unlock your fitness potential and prepare for your first Hyrox event.

Location:
Colchester Avenue Industrial Estate, Colchester Ave, Cardiff CF23 9AP
Operating hours:
6 AM to 7:30 PM Mon-Thu; Fri: 6 AM to 7:00 PM; Sun: 9-11
Club features:
personal trainers, CrossFit and Hyrox classes (see timetable), assorted gym machines, free weights and more.
