Hyrox is the fitness phenomenon that has swept the globe since its inception in 2017. It's not a workout plan or a lifestyle change; it's a combination of footracing and stations where racers perform set elements. It is popular because it is open to all and because it's predictable in its format; athletes train for Hyrox events that take place nearly year-round. Nowhere do we see the passion for this competition better than in our capital city, in the best Hyrox gyms London.

Introduction to Hyrox: What It Is and How It's Different

It's telling when an Olympic athlete confesses to frustration over standard physical training initiatives. The athlete in question is Moritz Fürste, who took the gold medal in field hockey at the 2012 London Olympics (and the 2008 Beijing Olympics before that).

His frustration sprang from the boredom of standard training regimens and the inaccessibility of sports, in general1. He and his friend, Christian Toetzke, conceived of a sports contest open to everyone, regardless of fitness level or physical ability.

They have a point

Athletic competition is generally hierarchical. Top athletes get to compete while everyone else passionate about their sport is left out of the running, as it were.

Hyrox does an end-run around the standard athletic hierarchy and banishes the main principle of competition for good measure. Normally, athletes compete against each other for recognition in their sport. Running a Hyrox race, participants only compete against themselves: to test their abilities and against their best times, if they've run the course before.

Hyrox makes its high-profile athletic competition inclusive through divisions. Hyrox participants choose the category (division) they will compete in. For example, the Open division invites men and women to test themselves against moderate workout requirements. By contrast, the Pro division stacks more weights and reps on the athletes' course requirements.

Designed to be inclusive

Typical athletic events challenge participants by not announcing elements beforehand. This undercuts their ability to strategise and meter their energy across the whole event.
Hyrox event elements never change; they are the same eight elements featured in Hyrox training programmes.

You likely noticed we refer to Hyrox as a race; that's no mistake. Hyrox combines running - eight kilometres (km) broken into 1 km segments - with station work. This combination tests athletes' endurance and strength, and compels them to develop a race strategy to ensure successful course completion. The eight stations never change their order, either:

  • Station 1: SkiErg
  • Station 2: sled push
  • Station 3: sled pull
  • Station 4: burpee broad jumps
  • Station 5: rowing
  • Station 6: kettlebell farmer's carry
  • Station 7: sandbag walking lunge
  • Station 8: wall balls

Note that each station's requirements vary depending on the division the athlete competes in. For example, Men's Open participants push a sled that weighs 152 kg; Pro racers' sleds weigh 50 kilos more.

Hyrox in London

The first HYROX event in London ... stood out in terms of its organization and presentation.

Matt B. Davis, hybrid sports journalist

Our capital city has a special claim to Hyrox status: it held the first-ever Hyrox event in the UK. By any measure, it was a remarkable event, from the participation numbers to spectator adulation2. Since its first foray into Hyrox in 2021, London has hosted events every year.

The most

In 2026, London has the most Hyrox events of any UK city.

Besides hosting the most events in one year, the London Hyrox community has earned one more distinction. London's 2025 Hyrox event saw the most participants and welcomed the most spectators of any Hyrox event ever in the whole of this sport's short history.

The logistics of accommodating more than 40,000 athletes across four days must have been mind-boggling! Pulling that off entailed meticulous planning and more than a bit of help from Hyrox community volunteers. If last year's event is any indicator, this year's event, in December, will be bigger yet!

Youngstars divisions

Hyrox has introduced a division for youth athletes. It offers two levels: 8-10 years old and 11-15. The elements are adjusted to reflect those age groups' abilities.

This year's London event will include the Youngstars division. However, London is not the Youngstars' debut city; that honour goes to Birmingham. Naturally, Hyrox clubs in that city are busily training their young competitors to make it the city's best showing ever.

Apex Fitness: A Dedicated Hyrox Gym London

Did you know that Cardiff has a de facto Hyrox community club? After that city's first Hyrox event (in 2025), participants gravitated to a facility that, till then, had been a standard gym. Today, it's where the Hyrox group gathers to share training tips and encouragement, and mentor each other. In a sense, Apex is the same type of facility; it features four Hyrox initiatives.

🏋️‍♀️ Hyrox Conditioning Finishers: a high-intensity conditioning programme.
🚂 Hyrox engine: keep the power flowing with this balanced workout.
🤼 Hyrox Thursday Throwdown: a friendly challenge that pits Hyrox athletes against one another.
🏃‍♂️ Hyrox Sim: a simulated Hyrox race, featuring running and elements.

This dedicated Hyrox training facility has won praise for its programming and for its support for the Hyrox community. At Apex, you can join group training sessions or train with a private mentor; you may even train for the next London Hyrox event online.

Location:
Unit 3, Glenville Mews London SW18 4NJ
Operating hours:
5 AM to 9 PM, 7 days a week.
Membership:
starts at £160/month, session packs available.

GroundWork Training: An Official Hyrox Gym

Like the other Hyrox clubs featured here - indeed, many Hyrox facilities across the UK, GroundWork is an official Hyrox training facility. As soon as you walk through the doors, you'll find all the mandated equipment and meet trained, enthusiastic coaches ready to help you reach your Hyrox-fit goals.

Location:
Unit 4 & 5, Riverbank Business Centre, 455 Wick Lane, London E3 2TB
Operating hours:
6 AM to 9 PM 7 days a week
Membership:
£45/week for Hyrox group training sessions; other membership packages available.

Choosing Your Hyrox Gym London

Obviously, we've barely scratched the surface of Hyrox gyms London, as various publications point out3. Like the Hyrox facilities in Glasgow, the London selections are so many that, if we listed them all, you'd never get to the club! Let alone have any idea what to look for in a Hyrox club. So, we leave you with these tips to find the right Hyrox gym for your needs.

📍 Location: facilities close to your home, work or school are ideal.
💳 Cost: Hyrox partner clubs tend to be a bit more expensive than Hyrox-affiliated ones.
📆 Schedules: gyms' Hyrox class schedules should accord with yours; otherwise, you may train with a private trainer.
🏋️‍♀️ Interest level: Hyrox-curious athletes could do well in a programme training on Hyrox aspects. Hyrox athletes need Hyrox-specific training facilities.
😀 Community: look for a facility that boasts a vibrant Hyrox community.
