Different people have different strategies for doing mental arithmetic, but many need to have some "scribbling space", particularly for the larger problems. For division problems like this most people would visualize the divisor (3) and the dividend (3.6) arranged in a conventional long division sum. 3 goes int 3 once, no remainder. So you'd write down 1. There's a decimal point after the 3, so you'd put in a decimal point after your 1. 3 goes into 6 twice, so you'd write down 2. There's no remainder and no more numbers so 1.2 must be the result. 3.6 divided by 3 is 1.2

Thank you for your reply,but i told you wrong i wanted 3.dev 3.6 when i calculat i get .833 this is what i wanted to be able to do with out calculator ?? Thank you ianmoth.

This is done in the same way as before. The first step I think would be to multiply top and bottom by 10, so you have 30 divided by 36. 36 won't go into 30 so the first number above the bar is zero. Then there's the decimal point. Effectively you must then "carry" the 30, adding the next number in the dividend, to make 300. 36 goes into 300 8 times, leaving remainder 12. This is carried to the next stage, giving you 120. 36 goes into 120 3 times, leaving remainder 12. theoretically you could go on forever, but we take the view that "near enough is near enough" and stop after 2 or 3 iterations. So the answer is 0.833

3/3.6=30/36=5/6.Then 6 into 5 = 0.? Then 5 carried over means 50/6 = 8. SO we have 0.8? Then 6x8=48 so 2 carried gives 20/6= 3. SO we have 0.83 and 2 is carried again, giving a repeated 3, SO 3/3.6= 0.8333333333... which converges to 5/6.
