3 monkeys ate a total of 25 nuts. Each one ate a different odd number of nuts. How many nuts did each monkey eat?

Answers
Actually there are a number of possible answers to this. Here's how I'd go about working it out. Firstly take the largest odd number for the first monkey you can - 23, and then think - how many nuts are left for the other 2 monkeys. In this case, it wont' work, as there are 2 nuts left so they'd have 2 each - no good as they need to each eat a different number.

So work your way down to the next odd number - first monkey eats 21 - so there are 4 nuts left over. That's fine - the other 2 monkeys can eat 1 nut and 3 nuts. Down again to next odd number: first monkey eats 19, so 6 nuts left for the other two. That's fine, the other 2 can eat 1 and 5 nuts. Down again, first monkey eats 17, so 8 nuts left over. That's fine, the other 2 can eat 1 and 7, or (another possibility), 3 nd 5. You get the idea!! Just work your way down through the odd numbers, in order to get all the possible answers. Or if you only need one answer, you can see there are lots of possibilities to choose from !
