Hmm, thought I'd already put my answer to this. Anyway...
Let Kim have K pounds, and Amul have A pounds. We know the following two things:
A + K = 10.70 (from the total amount)
K + 3.70 = A (Since Amul has £3.70 more than Kim).
Put the second equation in the first one:
K + 3.70 + K = 10.70
Therefore:
2K + 3.70 = 10.70
Subtract 3.70 from both sides:
2K + 3.70 - 3.70 = 2K
10.70 - 3.70 = 7.00
So we are left with:
2K = 7.00
Or, dividing both sides by two:
K = 7.00 / 2 = 3.50
So Kim has £3.50. Amul, meanwhile, has 3.50 + 3.70 = £7.20.
We can check that this works, and it does fit the total, so is the solution.
Hope this helps and is clear.

For such a short problem charging £20 would be rather harsh. Instead I would charge £20 for a whole hour or so of help.

If you are not so keen on algebra (putting the problem into letters and symbols) then think of it this way:
12 March 2013
Subtract £3.70 from £10.70 leaving £7.00. Then share that £7.00 equally between the two people giving £3.50 each and add the £3.70 to Amul's so that he has £7.20 while Kim only has £3.50. That can be checked and gives the correct total and the correct difference.
