Since everything in that is positive, in fact y can be as high as you like. Did you mean "minimum y value"? Or perhaps the equation is meant to be -x^2 + 6x + 8? In either case the approach should be the same. Use the method of "completing the square" that hopefully you will have come across. If not, or if you are still struggling, then get back to me and I will provide a fully worked solution, but hopefully it was just the starting point that was troubling you.
