The field of IT organises itself around a handful of key disciplines that work together.

• Hardware and software: the distinction between hardware (the machine) and software (the programs) is the first concept every IT learner needs to nail.
• Networking: a network allows computers to talk to one another — grasping how data travels is central to IT.
• Cybersecurity: security skills include identifying threats, applying patches, and setting up firewalls and encryption.
• Data management: databases store the information that applications rely on — knowing how to query and manage them is a core IT skill.

A private IT tutor can guide you through these concepts step by step and help you avoid common beginner mistakes.

A private IT lesson in Oxford costs approximately £27/h.

The cost depends on:

• Your skill level and specific learning goals
• The teacher's expertise and IT background
• The number of hours booked in advance
• Where the sessions take place

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style before committing.

IT is a wide field — focusing on the right topics early on saves time and builds a strong career foundation.

• Operating systems: OS basics — file systems, permissions, processes — are the backbone of IT support and administration.
• Networking fundamentals: understanding how data moves across networks is one of the most transferable skills in the IT field.
• Programming and scripting: even basic scripting skills dramatically improve your productivity in any IT role.
• Cloud computing: understanding cloud infrastructure helps you support modern businesses that have moved away from on-premise servers.

The right guidance makes it far easier to navigate the breadth of the IT field and build job-ready skills.
