FAQ's

🎵 Can you explain the third tone rule in Mandarin?

Chinese tones interact, and the 3-3 rule means the first of two third tones is pronounced as a rising tone instead.

Here is how it works:

  • When you say "hello" in Chinese, 你好 shifts from 3-3 to 2-3 automatically.
  • Other common words follow the same pattern: 很好 (hěn hǎo) becomes "hén hǎo".
  • Native speakers apply this rule without thinking, so it sounds unnatural if you keep both third tones flat.

A third tone dips low then rises slightly, but when followed by another third tone, the first one simply rises.

💰 What do Chinese classes typically cost in Birmingham?

In Birmingham, private Chinese tutoring runs about £21/h per session.

This rate can vary based on several factors:

  • Beginner, intermediate, or advanced courses each have different pricing
  • The tutor's qualifications, native speaker status, and teaching experience
  • Lesson format: online sessions, in-person at home, or at the tutor's location
  • Lesson length and frequency, with discounts often available for regular bookings

Many tutors offer the first lesson free, so you can test their teaching style before committing.

🔢 What are the basic numerals in Mandarin Chinese?

The foundation of Chinese numeracy is mastering these ten basic numerals and their tones.

Here are the numbers with pinyin and tones:

  • 1-3: 一 yī, 二 èr, 三 sān
  • 四 (sì) = 4, 五 (wǔ) = 5, 六 (liù) = 6
  • 七 (qī) = 7, 八 (bā) = 8, 九 (jiǔ) = 9, 十 (shí) = 10

Pay attention to the tones: 一 and 七 use first tone (high flat), while 四 uses fourth tone (sharp falling).

Practise saying these aloud daily until the tones become automatic.

The written language (文, wén) is different from the Han language, spoken by the Han people.

Pinyin is usually used for the phonetic transcription of Chinese words to help people pronounce them and to explain the Chinese grammatical rules.

The Pinyin writing system can make learning Chinese much easier for westerners, but it won't help them learn Chinese characters.

This is why some teachers prefer not to use it as it leads to their students picking up bad habits when it comes to reading and writing in Chinese. For example, to say hello in Chinese (你好), you'd write “nĭ hăo” in Hanyu Pinyin. Pronunciation is one of the most difficult aspects of Chinese as each syllable can be pronounced using one of five different tones, giving it up to five different meanings.

The word "ma" can mean completely different things depending on the way you pronounce it: Mother, hemp, horse, curse, or, when using the neutral tone, can transform the sentence into a question.

Chinese is the language with the most speakers worldwide.
