The Pareto principle applied to drumming suggests focusing on core skills yields the biggest gains.

• Master basic sticking patterns before tackling complex fills or solos.
• Keeping time accurately matters more than speed or complexity.
• Targeted practice on trouble spots accelerates progress significantly.

This approach saves hours of wasted effort on techniques you rarely use.

Beginners should focus on how to hold sticks correctly and play a basic 4/4 groove.

• Stick grip: Hold each stick between thumb and index finger, with other fingers wrapped loosely.
• Single stroke roll: It forms the basis for nearly every fill and groove you will ever play.
• Basic rock beat: Once steady, you can add variations like open hi-hats or extra kicks.

They create a platform for learning more complex grooves, fills, and styles.
