French teachers often name the subjunctive as the hardest tense to master. You use it when statements involve possibility or personal reactions, not certainty.

• Trigger phrases — Expressions like "il faut que", "je veux que", or "bien que" require the subjunctive.
• Irregular stems — High-frequency verbs have unique subjunctive forms you must memorise.
• Practice tip — Memorise complete phrases before analysing the grammar.

Regular practice with real sentences helps this tense feel less intimidating over time.

Private French lessons in New Malden average £22/h.

This rate varies several factors:

• Your current ability (GCSE, A-Level, or conversational)
• Your teacher's background and credentials (years of experience, exam specialisms)
• How often you book and session duration (weekly, intensive, or occasional)
• The lesson format (online, at home, or at the tutor's location)

Opting for online lessons can also reduce fees while keeping quality high. A trial session lets you experience their teaching style at no cost.

The Pareto principle means a minority of vocabulary does the majority of communication work.

It encourages efficiency: master the essentials before expanding to rarer terms.

• Core vocabulary — The 1,000 most common words cover about 85% of written French.
• Grammar priorities — Focus on the tenses you will actually use before studying rare literary forms.
• Real-world exposure — Conversations naturally repeat high-frequency words and patterns.

Smart prioritisation helps you communicate sooner, which keeps motivation high.
