Japanese has two counting systems: the Sino-Japanese and the native Japanese.

The Sino-Japanese system (the most common system):

• 1 = ichi, 2 = ni, 3 = san, 4 = shi or yon, 5 = go
• 6 = roku, 7 = shichi or nana, 8 = hachi, 9 = kyuu or ku, 10 = juu

The native system (often paired with everyday items):

• 1 = hitotsu, 2 = futatsu, 3 = mittsu, 4 = yottsu, 5 = itsutsu
• 6 = muttsu, 7 = nanatsu, 8 = yattsu, 9 = kokonotsu, 10 = too

The variations for 4, 7, and 9 exist due to superstitions around similar-sounding words.

The average price for a Japanese lesson in Torquay is around £22/h per hour.

The final cost depends on a few important elements:

• The student's proficiency (JLPT N5 through N1 preparation)
• Your teacher's background (years of teaching experience)
• Lesson format (online via video call, at your home, or at the tutor's location)
• Frequency and duration (one-off lessons or regular packages)

Many tutors offer discounted rates for booking multiple lessons in advance.

Japanese presents unique challenges, but each element follows clear rules once understood.

What makes Japanese distinct:

• Three writing systems: hiragana (46 characters), katakana (46 characters), and thousands of kanji
• Grammar structure: verbs come at the end of sentences, which feels backwards at first
• No articles or plurals: there is no distinction between singular and plural nouns

Encouragingly: once you learn hiragana, you can read any word written in it correctly.
