Why Become a Nurse?

It's no secret that the UK health care system labours under a severe shortage of nurses. It's understandable that so few would want a career in nursing; even social media influencers can out-earn a health care professional. It takes a lot less effort and study to work in many career fields. And, most importantly, you're not taking people's lives in your hands when you're on duty if you work in a shop or business.

There's more than these obvious points underpinning the nursing shortage, though. There's an average 3% loss, year on year, of those registering as nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Even more disturbing is the spike in de-registrations; in 2017, that number rose to 23%. So many trained, experienced nurses leaving the profession means that those who remain must work longer hours, caring for more patients.

Even more alarming: Great Britain is getting older and sicker. Nursing rolls for geriatric and hospice care are severely lacking, as are pediatric nurses. The rise of pediatric asthma cases alone proves that we need more nurses in this speciality, not fewer. Likewise, school nurses are in increasingly short supply. Imagine a student with food allergies having no one to treat them after a school lunch triggers an attack.

Nursing isn't just a noble profession. It's stood the test of time, both as the patients' first and last contact with medical services.  Sometimes, nurses are the only health care contact; picture the UK's growing telenursing market. Nurses provide care throughout patients' health care experiences, too. They do everything patient intake to bedside monitoring.

Much of what today's nurses do seems obvious. Of course, they administer medications the doctor prescribed.
