Easing another's suffering is one of the noblest acts, exceeded only by caring for others. Both of those qualities lie at the very heart of nursing. Curiously, though, it wasn't until a Victorian-era free thinker established norms for nursing that it was thought of as a profession in its own right. Until then, doctors did the heavy lifting. Nurses 'cleaned up' after them, so to speak.
Florence Nightingale was a remarkable woman. Today, she's known as the pioneer of modern nursing but that description doesn't do her justice. She standardised medical recordkeeping, trained nurses to the appropriate standards of care and lowered infection rates by improving hygiene on the wards. Furthermore, she used her skills in statistics to debut the polar area diagram in medicine. Today, those diagrams are better known as pie charts.
For all of her acts of seeming gender parity, Florence Nightingale held herself and her nurses distinctly apart from traditional male roles, even in the medical field. She contended that only men could cultivate the skills needed for surgery. Women must, by their nature, be the caregivers. For her, nursing was the pinnacle of female achievement in medicine. She developed the field to be as vital as the one practised by her male counterparts.
Today, nursing and medical practice are open to anyone who qualifies, regardless of gender. Still, there is substantial disparity in the nursing ranks as only 15% the UK nursing staff is male. Clearly, there's room to grow, here, because men are just as capable of the 6Cs as anyone else is.
The six Cs of nursing are care, compassion, communication, competence, commitment and courage. They were formally outlined as criteria for nursing more than 100 years after Florence Nightingale died. We note, though, that those are the very elements she instilled in her students. They're the qualities you'll develop during your nursing classes and cultivate throughout your career.
An incident in 2012 underscored the need to make these personal qualities a part of nurses' training. Nursing staff at one UK hospital had so badly neglected their patients that an entire commission formed to remedy the situation. Compassion in Practice was the initiative's end result. Today's nurses are not just trained in the clinical aspects of nursing but also in compassionate care. Thus, we can rightly say that nursing isn't a 'mechanical' profession; there is a lot of humanity involved.
The University of Manchester Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health is one of the UK's outstanding medical programs. Indeed, it was recently rated Number One in Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing. These allied health professions, closely related to medicine but not considered medical practice are some of the most severely impacted by personnel shortages. As you are studying nursing in Manchester, you're poised to fill an urgent need.
After completing your studies and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, a necessary step to practising, you may choose any medical facility to ply your skills in. Our National Health Service (NHS) hospitals are chronically understaffed but so are doctors' surgeries, dentists' offices and hospice care facilities. Indeed, with your nursing license, you have as secure a future as possible in these times. People will always need care, after all.
Whether you aim to do patient intake in an Accident and Emergency (A&E) department or assist in the operating theatre, your nursing curriculum is rigorous and challenging. You have to master complex skills like dropping a nasogastric tube and intellectual matters like interpreting saturation levels and other health indicators. And the pressure, particularly during your practical studies!
For all of these aspects of training as a nurse, there's a Superprof to guide you. You might need to review ahead of an exam or simply have someone present complex material in everyday terms. Or help you organise your notes and set up a study and review schedule. It could be that you need someone to talk with who's been through the nursing program. Someone who knows what you're going through. Online or in person, Superprof nursing tutors use their 6C skills to help you reach your goals.
