Find a Russian tutor near me in Beeston

In Russian, seven consonants block the use of ы: these are г, к, х (velar sounds) and ж, ш, щ, ч (sibilants).

This rule affects word endings constantly.

• Plurals: книга becomes книги (not книгы), because the stem ends in г.
• After х, adjectives take -ий: hence тихий (quiet), never тыхый.
• Even when и sounds like ы (after ж, ш, щ, ч), you still write и.

Master this rule first, and plurals and adjective endings become predictable.

Russian lessons in Beeston typically cost £18/h per hour.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Your level: beginners, intermediate, or advanced learners may pay different rates.
• Tutor background: university lecturers and professional interpreters command higher fees.
• How often you meet: regular weekly lessons or intensive blocks affect cost per hour.
• Delivery method: video calls tend to cost less than in-person sessions.

Some teachers provide package deals: booking ten lessons often brings a better rate.

Russian uses 33 characters split into three groups: 21 consonant letters, 10 vowels, and 2 modifier signs.

Here's how the alphabet breaks down:

• 21 consonants: б, в, г, д, ж, з, й, к, л, м, н, п, р, с, т, ф, х, ц, ч, ш, щ. Some look like Latin letters but sound different.
• 10 vowel letters form pairs: а/я, у/ю, о/ё, ы/и, э/е, where the second softens consonants.
• Special markers (2): ь softens the preceding consonant, while ъ separates consonants from soft vowels.

Watch out for false friends: Russian Р sounds like English "r", not "p"; Russian С sounds like "s", not "c".
