Russian spelling rule #1 states that ы never follows г, к, х, ж, ш, щ, or ч, and и takes its place.

You'll encounter this rule in plurals and adjectives.

• The plural of книга is книги, since г requires и.
• Adjective endings shift from -ый to -ий after these consonants: тихий, not тыхый.
• The pronunciation stays the same after ж, ш, щ, ч, but spelling always uses и.

Master this rule first, and plurals and adjective endings become predictable.

The average price of a Russian lesson in Cambridge is around £21/h.

Prices can shift based on:

• Difficulty level: introductory Cyrillic or business Russian change the rate.
• Teacher credentials: native Russian speakers and qualified linguists often charge more.
• Lesson length and frequency: weekly sessions or intensive courses offer different value.
• Delivery method: video calls tend to cost less than in-person sessions.

Some teachers provide package deals: booking ten lessons often brings a better rate.

Cyrillic script for Russian has exactly 33 letters, organised into consonants, vowels, and two silent markers.

The structure works like this:

• 21 consonant letters include familiar shapes like в and н, plus distinctly Russian ones like ж and щ.
• Vowels (10): five hard (а, у, о, ы, э) and five soft (я, ю, ё, и, е), which palatalise the preceding consonant.
• 2 signs: ь (soft sign) and ъ (hard sign) produce no sound alone but modify pronunciation.

Watch out for false friends: Russian Р sounds like English "r", not "p"; Russian С sounds like "s", not "c".
