About Matt

Hi, I’m Matt, a Bristol-based mix engineer with extensive experience working across a wide range of genres, with particular affinity for jazz, Afrobeat/world music and psychedelic-infused productions. I cut my teeth at Abbey Road Studios and have since mixed records for artist including Ezra Collective, Nubiyan Twist, Tenderlonious, BROCKHAMPTON and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. (Search for Matt Mysko to hear examples of my work.)

I approach mixing from a fairly intuitive direction believing that as mix engineers, we must hold feeling and emotion as our primary guides. At the same time, mixing is as much a science as it is an art. Much of the real skill lies in balancing objective analysis and technical decision-making with musicality, creativity and instinct. It often feels like walking a tightrope, but learning how to stay balanced is where confidence and clarity emerge!

In our 1:1 mix mentoring sessions, we’ll identify the obstacles holding you back and work through them together. Whether you are struggling to achieve that professional finish, getting stuck down rabbit holes of mix translation issues and self-doubt, or trying to make sense of technical concepts such as stereo depth/imaging, compression, bus processing or frequency balance, each session is tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Alongside mixing, I also write and produce my own music and am one half of the duo Hong Kongleton. While my main focus is mix mentoring, I also offer tuition in music production and recording for beginners and intermediates. These sessions can take many forms, so feel free to reach out and we can discuss whether I’m a good fit for where you’re at.

Often, I find it works best if you bring material you have been working on along with any questions or challenges you’re facing. However, I also have a bank of professional multitracks available if you’d prefer structured practice material.

Sessions can focus on specific areas of mixing theory, or take the form of detailed mix feedback that opens up wider discussion and learning points. The emphasis is always on practical, transferable learning rather than rigid rules (as ultimately there is no right and wrong!)

I offer in-person sessions in Bristol, but many students choose to work remotely. Using Zoom, screen sharing and Audiomovers’ high-quality audio streaming, we can both listen from the sweet spot simultaneously, making online sessions just as effective.

I’ve worked with mentees using a wide range of DAWs, and most of the principles I teach transcend specific software or plug-ins. That said, my primary DAWs are Pro Tools and Ableton Live, and I’m happy to offer DAW-specific guidance within those environments.

I offer our first lesson together as a 90-minute session for the price of one hour. This gives us extra time to get to know each other, discuss your intentions and goals, and set up the audio streaming smoothly.

If you feel I might be able to help, or if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
