About Guy
My name is Guy, I’m a gap year student and am going to study Maths and Philosophy at St Andrews University. I finished sixth form last summer with fantastic results and decided I wanted to take a gap year for work experience. I started teaching a small group of year 13s Further Maths Statistics at Hills Road Sixth Form College from the start of the academic year right up until mid January when the course was finished. I massively enjoyed my time teaching, I had a lot of job satisfaction and wanted nothing but the best for my students. I now want to help as many students as I can pass their exams or just improve their maths generally before the summer break.

Doing really well in Maths at GCSE, A-Level or IB is all about practice. The way I taught the Year 13s at my previous school was simple but very effective: first I give a short, digestible, interactive summary of the particular topic so that the students first know how to approach the relevant problems. Then I work through some problems giving hints and help when needed until the student can do them independently. That usually takes up the whole lesson, if there is time at the end I set them usually one or two problems to do by themselves right before the next lesson (active recall - helps retain knowledge much better). If exams are fast approaching then I usually go through a whole exam paper with them to find the holes in knowledge and clear up any misunderstanding, then it’s just plenty of exam question until the real thing. These techniques not only helped me get my 9s and A*s but also many of my friends as well, it is tried and tested.
