About Richard
I'm relatively new to the area, having recently moved from London, where I was working for 2 years as a Maths and Science tutor at Primary and Secondary level, preparing students for GCSE and Common Entry exams.
My academic background is in Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science, though I have since discovered a love of biology, chemistry, psychology and philosophy. In my spare time I also create projects looking at artificial intelligence, primarily artificial neural networks.
I have taught a wide variety of ages and ability levels, helping gifted students to fulfil their potential, and struggling students to improve and understand the subject matter. I have had a total of eight long-term students with whom I've been able to build knowledge and understanding of the topics in question, and go on to achieve grades above those that were predicted for them. In addition, I have also had a number of other shorter-term clients (usually around exam time) looking for assistance in their exam preparation.

I'm an enthusiastic tutor, passionate about the subjects I teach, and patient and friendly yet professional in my approach.
When tutoring I like to identify and tackle the root of a student's problems with a topic, whether a general areas of weakness, or a misunderstanding of key concepts. Particularly with Maths, I find that many students who are simply taught by-rote methods for solving problems struggle in those areas. I prefer instead to give students a broader background in the subject, and explain why they're doing what they're doing.
