Alexander - St. George - Violin

Methodology

With 20 years experience teaching all ages from beginner to advanced, as well as teaching the classical repertoire and technique I also share my knowledge of improvisation and song-writing to assist students to play and compose their own music.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I mainly teach classical violin from beginner to advanced standard, but I also teach folk fiddle styles, and more modern improvisation techniques - usually for older students who are interested in playing in bands or creating their own music.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have completed my grades in the AMEB classical system up to Associate of Music level, and I hold a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the University of Southern Queensland (Australia).

- How much do you charge?

The cost for lessons is £30 p/hr or you can receive a discount by paying in advance for a block of four lessons at £100.

- Where do you teach?

I have a car and can come to your home anywhere in the Bristol or Bath area.

- When are you available?

I am available to teach every afternoon and evening of the week except for sunday nights.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

Beginner to advanced levels, up to grade 8 classical - 5 yrs upwards.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for examinations for classical violin through the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

The most enjoyable and rewarding experiences with music always arrive through a careful cultivation of the artist within.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught privately since I was at university in 1997, and more recently at a private music school in Melbourne (references available). Since moving to England in 2008 I have started teaching privately again.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I currently hold hold a police check certificate for Australia and am in the process of obtaining my CRB check for the UK.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba with Andrew Lorenz, a violinist of great renown who was concert master of the London Symphony Orchestra before embarking on his solo career.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

One of my students is a 43 year old woman who is starting to play for the first time. She wanted to learn from me because she didn't want to learn from music and play scales etc, but instead wanted to improvise and learn to play in the gypsy style over songs such as 'Dark Eyes' etc. At the moment we are doing simple exercises for technique, but she is showing a lot of enthusiasm for the improvisation and I have no doubt that with the basic skills mastered she will be off and away and playing and making up her own solos to go along with the backing tracks. She is not interested in playing professionally, but enjoys violin as a hobby for herself.

Another of my students loves folk music, but as she has developed a lot of tension in her playing through stress and 'trying too hard' a lot of what we are working through at the moment is helping her to relax more and flow with the music, rather then forcing it. To this end I am going through the same exercises from my classical technique that I learnt at university when my teacher helped me through a similar issue. As she improving and learning to relax, her playing has become more natural and 'authentic' sounding.

I also have a student who is learning to play classical music. He has progressed quickly during the year and is now playing quite a complex piece from the repertoire. As ever, it is technique that is the first issue to overcome, but as he is determined he is able to take on and apply what he learns from the lesson to good effect. As he sorts out the technical issues of the piece his individual playing style comes through more easily which makes the process a lot more enjoyable.
