Alexandra - Fulwood - Music Theory

Methodology

I teach flute, singing and music theory lessons to all ages and abilities. Choose to study with me to receive tailored, individual tuition and be part of a supportive musical community that meets regularly to play, perform and have fun!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach flute, singing and music theory lessons.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I studied for a BA in music at Durham University in 2005 having achieved ABRSM grade 8 with distinction in both flute and voice. I continued my studies at Durham for a further year to complete a MA in composition studying with composer Trevor Wishart. In the year following university, I completed the Licentiate Diploma in Flute Performance from Trinity Collage London, passing with distinction. I returned home to Sheffield in 2009 to study for a primary education PGCE. I received my qualified teacher status in 2011 and have worked for six years uninterrupted as a primary school teacher and private tutor in Sheffield.

- How much do you charge?

My students attend 30 minute individual lessons costing £15 a lesson, although I am happy to provide 60 minute lessons upon request for the discounted rate of £28 an hour.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from the relaxed setting of my home in Lodge Moor, Sheffield.

- When are you available?

I am available for lessons in the daytime or evenings during school term times.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach beginner to advanced level flute and singing – ABRSM grades 1 – 8. There is no age limit - I teach a number of adult learners.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students to take the ABRSM classical flute or singing exams grades 1 - 8 usually but would consider entering students for Trinity College should they prefer this for any reason.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I do not presently tutor online.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

In addition to my six years of primary school classroom experience, working with children in KS1 and KS2, I began private music teaching whilst still at school and have worked as a private music teacher ever since. I now have more than ten years private music teaching experience, have taught and entered students for all ABRSM grades with excellent results, and have experience of teaching students of all ages including adult learners.
I have my own school choir and am the vocal tutor at Stagecoach Sheffield. ((concealed information)

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an up to date advanced disclosure (CRB check). Please get in touch if you would like to view my online certification.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at Durham University Music Department.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a vocal tutor at Stagecoach Sheffield (concealed information)

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am extremely proud of all of my students but if I had to pick out a few recent highlights they would be as follows: Last summer, one of my flute students achieved ABRSM grade 8 with distinction aged only 15 whilst in the same exam period, another student achieved grade 6 distinction in her flute exam having already achieved grade 5 theory with distinction earlier in the year. Another private singing students of mine is currently playing Summer in Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End musical School of Rock. She will be doing so for 9 months.

Alexandra instills great enthusiasm for the music - I never have to nag my daughter to practise. This, together with her organised and professional approach, means I would unreservedly recommend her as a music teacher.

Alexandra is a fun and insightful music teacher who I very much recommend. In the past year she supported me through my grade 5 theory and grade 6 flute exam and I passed both with distinction! I am so grateful having her as my teacher as lessons are always laid back and enjoyable, which has really inspired my love for flute playing and appreciation for music in general. Five stars!

At the ripe old age of 42 I took up learning the flute...It is never too late! Huge thanks to Alexandra Middleton-Holland for her patience, excellent teaching and massive support. Alexandra is a great teacher. [My daughter] is now starting lessons in September too!!

I began flute lessons with Alexandra as a non-reader of music and now look at me! I enjoy relaxed and informative sessions in lovely surroundings. One criticism though - lessons end too soon!

Alexandra is a motivational teacher who relates really well to children. She has a great way of keeping my daughter interested and inspiring her to want to achieve and I am so impressed with how much she has learnt. The end of year concert in particular was brilliant, both to give my daughter a chance to show what she had achieved, and also for her to see the more experienced students and appreciate what is possible if she keeps working at it.

We have had a very positive experience. Our son is making great progress and, what's more, he looks forward to every lesson.

Alexandra is a fantastic teacher and is well respected and liked by her students. Our daughter enjoys her flute lessons and the approach to learning. She has made really good progress and she was new to the flute when she started. She has felt supported and encouraged. We would recommend Alexandra's flute lessons.

Alexandra is a great teacher; she has taught our son the flute now for four years and he has always enjoyed his lessons. She has worked hard to really get to know him and what suits him musically. He has just passed his grade 8 with distinction which I'm sure is down both to his ability but also her enthusiasm and knowledge
