Hi, I'm Amy Wakefield and I would love to share my passion for Piano, Violin and Music Teaching with anybody who has the desire to learn and practice. I am looking for keen pupils, learners and musicians who require tuition of the very highest level.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- Tell me about your qualifications.
My career started when I was accepted at Chetham's School of Music and studied at the very highest level. I was offered a scholarship to Birmingham Conservatoire in 2004 and gained my BMus (hons) with a 2:1 in 2008. Over the next year I trained at Birmingham City University as a Teacher of Music and Peripatetic keyboard teacher and gained Qualified Teacher Status. I achieved my Grade 8 violin and piano with distinction at a young age.
- How much do you charge?
Piano and violin tuition are as follow:
Beginners- Grade 7:
£14- 30 minutes (under 8 years)
£21- 45 minutes (8+ years)
£28 - 1 hour
Grade 8 and Advanced
£32- 1 hour
- Where do you teach?
I teach privately at my home in Congleton, Cheshire. This is near to Macclesfield and has very good links to the M6 motor way near Sandbach. I also live a five minute walk from Congleton train station. Please note that I do not travel to people's homes as I have all facilities required in my music room.
- When are you available?
Mondays- Daytime/early evening
Wednesdays- Early evening
School Holidays- Available on a flexible basis
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
My pupils learn piano and violin to a very high level from ages four up to adult learners. My pupils have excellent technique which is something I expect from my pupils from a very young age. They learn all round music skills through a variety of games and activities which make each aspect of learning fast pace and fun whilst gaining each of the fundamental skills needed for playing the piano and violin. I have developed a style of teaching which can be adapted to the learner but I have extremely high expectations and expect all of my pupils to practice regularly and to achieve their full potential. I strongly encourage my pupils to perform in concerts at my home and in EPTA events, local festivals as I believe this helps pupils progress and build in confidence. My pupils have achieved excellent results in their ABRSM exams. In 2014 the majority of my pupils achieved distinctions and I entered pupils from Prep Test level- Grade 8.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I am able to assist with all levels of ABRSM Music Theory and GCSE/A Level Music examinations. ABRSM examinations on piano and violin will be prepared for throughout tuition if the learner requires this route of learning. I can prepare pupils for entry into Universities and Music Colleges across the UK and with the audition process they would be required to take.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I welcome any ability and age, whether it's to try something new or alternatively, continue with something they are passionate about. The two very important ingredients you will need to begin with are; a piano with suitable stool and plenty of time- learning the piano does require regular (daily) practice, it is not possible to progress with out this. Please do contact me if you need advice on pianos as you will need this before you start your tuition. I can teach music to the highest level and am extremely keen to pass on my knowledge of Music and the Performing Arts in general. Please feel free to contact me if you require further information about the learning of an instrument or musical skills.
- What kind of experience do you have?
My teaching and performing experience has allowed me to teach beginners up to Diploma/Advanced level for the past 10 years. I am a member of EPTA (European Piano Teachers Association) and recently my pupil won the regional final of the piano competition for the Intermediate class and other pupils have been very successful. I regularly help with concerts and workshops where my pupils have the opportunity to perform at venues such as Chetham's and Forsyth's in Manchester. My pupils also compete in local festivals and participate in regular concerts at my home in Cheshire where they can also win an award for special achievements. After studying the piano at Birmingham Conservatoire, I also went onto gaining my Secondary Music PGCE (Instrumental Route) at Birmingham City University. I have experience as a classroom music teacher (ages 4-18) and in special needs. I have taught children from beginner level up to post grade 8/Diploma level along with have been recently helping students with music college auditions. I've had superb feedback from parents and I have regularly helped pupils achieve distinction in their ABRSM exams on piano and violin.
Among my most recent performing experiences include work as Guest Entertainer for P&O cruises and Cunard in which I perform in a series of Classical concerts with Sarah Douglas (my duo partner on Clarinet) and as a solo pianist. We received excellent feedback as performers. Recent concerts include, Buxton Opera House, Bury Parish Church and venues in London, Hampshire, Somerset and Yorkshire. We like to include works by Ginastera, Mozart, Liszt, Chopin and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. We are looking forward to Our next appearances on the Queen Victoria and Oriana very soon.
I work as an Accompanist for Dance for the RAD and recently at a The Hammond where I played for Ballet, Tap and Musical Theatre. I also work as an Accompanist for two local choirs- The Lydian Singers of Knutsford and The Phoenix Singers of Leek. This includes accompanying rehearsals and performing in concerts and performances. I work locally with a range of musicians as an accompanist and enjoy playing in concerts regularly. As a violinist I also enjoy regularlyl playing in a string quintets, trios and in a professional duo in the Cheshire/ Staffordshire area. With 'The Balfour Quartet' I play in events, weddings along with a recent celebration in the local town hall. I have played in various string ensembles and orchestras in the area and worked with recording artists in sessions. I am part of an acoustic duo of guitar and violin and we are regular guest performers in local venues.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
On the piano I began my lessons with Mrs Vera James and went onto learning with Miss Susan Bettaney at Chetham's School of Music where I also learnt with teachers for musicianship skills, sight reading, accompaniment, harpsichord/fortepiano and duet lessons with teachers such as Peter Lawson, Simon Bottomley, Murry Mclachlan and Bernard Roberts. My violin tuition began with Sarah Morley and at Chetham's with Mr Vernon.
At Birmingham Conservatoire my training was with the Head of Piano, Malcolm Wilson and Victor Sangiorgio but also studied with various teachers in masterclasses and also in musicianship as well.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- Tell me about some of your current students.
My students are ranging from beginners up to Grade 8 and Diploma standard. They mainly learn in a classical style but some of my students prefer to learn in a more modern style and are learning to play some current music in the charts. I always ensure that pupils ar given the opportunity to play music which inspires and interests them.
