About Kathleen
Alongside my doctoral research, I have maintained an active presence within both academic and professional architectural communities. My practice-based PhD has been developed in collaboration with the National Trust, culminating in a public exhibition at a nationally recognised heritage site. My research has been presented at international conferences and selected for exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy 200th Annual Exhibition, with work also accepted for publication.
Prior to my doctoral studies, I worked in architectural practice in London, gaining experience across a range of project types and scales. I hold ARB and RIBA Part I and Part II qualifications, and am currently completing my PhD at Northumbria University.
I am professional, approachable, and committed to creating a supportive learning environment in which students feel confident to develop at their own pace. I have experience working with students across all undergraduate year groups, including as an invited reviewer for students beyond my own tutor group.

I am a doctoral researcher and Part II qualified architect with three years of experience teaching on the undergraduate Architecture programme at Northumbria University, where I work as a studio tutor. My tutorials focus on supporting students through the design process, from initial concept development to resolved proposals, covering core architectural skills including orthographic drawing, physical modelling, site analysis, and construction knowledge.
My approach is conversational and student-led. I encourage critical reflection and iterative thinking, helping students develop confidence in their own design instincts rather than simply providing answers. I am particularly well-placed to support students with design projects, portfolio development, and dissertation and thesis work. Drawing on my own experience as an active researcher, I can also support students with essay writing, academic writing skills, and history and theory modules helping them to develop a clear, confident academic voice.
Lessons are tailored to the individual and typically last one hour, though longer sessions can be arranged. I welcome students at undergraduate and postgraduate level, whether working through a specific design problem, or looking for broader academic support across their architecture programme.
