About Wyatt
I am an Architecture tutor with 6 years of experience and a Master of Architecture degree. I have taught over 170 students at secondary and university level, from students preparing architecture portfolios for undergraduate applications through to those developing postgraduate design projects. My professional architectural training gives my teaching a genuine practitioner perspective that connects academic study to the realities of architectural practice. My Architecture teaching is organised around the three fundamental skills that distinguish excellent architecture students — spatial thinking, historical and theoretical awareness, and technical precision — and I develop each systematically rather than allowing students to develop only in the dimensions that come most naturally to them. Design critique is the central teaching activity in my lessons, using rigorous analysis of student design work as the primary vehicle for developing design intelligence, because architectural understanding develops through the cycle of making, critiquing, and revising rather than through passive instruction. My approach to architectural history treats the built environment as a record of social, economic, and technological conditions as much as of aesthetic intent, because students who understand why buildings were designed the way they were in specific historical contexts develop far more sophisticated analytical frameworks than those who only know what buildings look like. I develop spatial thinking through three-dimensional modelling exercises, both physical and digital, because the ability to think about space — to understand how a building will feel from the inside based on drawings viewed from the outside — is a genuinely distinct cognitive skill that requires specific development. Technical drawing is taught with precise attention to convention — line weights, hatching, dimensioning, and notation standards — because professional architectural drawings are a communication medium with specific conventions that practitioners expect to be followed. Portfolio development receives dedicated attention because the architecture portfolio is the primary instrument for university applications and professional advancement, and its development requires both design quality and presentation skill. My teaching goal is an architecture student who is prepared intellectually, technically, and creatively for the demands of architectural education and practice.
