Find out more about Mr M P

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in mathematics and physics developed during my secondary school years, where I was fascinated by how abstract concepts could explain real-world phenomena. My journey into teaching began naturally as I started helping classmates understand difficult topics. Over time, this evolved into a professional passion, and I moved into formal teaching and later private tutoring to support students more personally.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics and physics, particularly at secondary and pre-university levels. I enjoy topics that involve deep reasoning and problem-solving, such as calculus (especially differentiation and optimisation), algebra, and mechanics in physics. These areas allow students to see patterns and develop logical thinking.
I am less inclined toward purely procedural topics that lack conceptual depth, but I still ensure students gain clarity and confidence in them.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had teachers who combined strong subject knowledge with clarity and patience. What inspired me most was their ability to simplify complex ideas and make students feel capable. That approach has strongly influenced my own teaching style.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    A good tutor must have:

    Strong subject knowledge
The ability to explain concepts in multiple ways
    Patience and empathy
The skill to identify student weaknesses quickly
    A structured and disciplined approach
Most importantly, a tutor should build confidence in students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember a student who struggled significantly with algebra and had lost confidence completely. Instead of rushing through content, I focused on rebuilding their foundation step by step. Over time, the student not only improved but started enjoying mathematics. Seeing that transformation reinforced my belief that clarity and patience can change a student’s entire mindset.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the key challenges is helping students move from procedural learning to true conceptual understanding. Many students are used to memorising steps rather than understanding the “why.” Bridging this gap requires time, consistency, and the right teaching strategy.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My primary passion is teaching, especially helping students achieve clarity in complex topics. Within mathematics, I particularly enjoy calculus and algebra because they develop deep analytical thinking. I also have a strong interest in creating structured learning resources and lessons that students can revisit independently.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

My strength lies in combining classroom teaching experience with personalised tutoring. I understand curriculum requirements, exam expectations, and how to guide students toward higher achievement levels (Merit and Excellence).
I focus on structured explanations, clear methods, and building long-term understanding rather than short-term results.
