About Geoff
I am an artist curator, based in South-West England, with an extensive international career. As a filmmaker, I have worked all over the world, and my films have been presented and broadcast by major networks on five continents. I have shown films and made personal presentations in such venues as the Tate and National Galleries, in London, the Metropolitan and Witney Museums, in New York, and the Centre Pompidou, in Paris.
Yet I take equal pleasure and pride in encouraging individual people, of all ages and backgrounds, to gain confidence in the way they respond to photography and visual art, whether as makers or simply as enthusiastic viewers. In recent years I have run photography courses for teenagers at NCS summer schools, and I have run workshops at schools in Oxford and Somerset. As an artist, curator and filmmaker, I consider mentoring the young and inexperienced as an integral role.
Before committing myself to the visual media, I was a journalist - notably at The Times of Malawi and The Times of London. I still write, and the relationship between words, ideas and the visual arts remains a key theme for me, as both an artist and teacher.

Although I am fluent with video and film, my preferred way of communicating on a daily basis is face-to-face. I love conversation, whether it is with one person, a small group, or an audience of 500. I am as happy to talk with a five-year-old struggling to read as a hall filled with academics and experts.
I tailor-make my teaching to the needs and wishes of the individual student or to the group. And I am flexible enough to adapt my teachings tools if I see the need to do so. Given that I am working with visual subjects, visual material is a vital source. I'll usually start with a picture and encourage my student(s) to respond in their own terms to this stimulus before moving on to the main theme. I always value the subjectivity of the person I am communicating with and will always encourage them to have faith in their own opinions.
With photography, I am well able to give technical instruction but will always caution against making technique the prime subject. I point out to my students that I believe technique to be a tool which enables photographers to express their ideas and feelings with confidence. It is not an end in itself.
With the other visual arts, I do not teach practical techniques but encourage students address the question Why? It is quite as important as the question How?
