About Vicky
I don't believe there is one right way to make a film. My role is to help you develop your ideas, find your own creative voice and give you the practical tools and confidence to make them happen.
I am a multi-award-winning filmmaker, art director and educator with over 11 years of experience teaching film production, animation and creative practice. I am a graduate of the National Film and Television School (NFTS), specialising in Directing Animation, and have worked professionally as a director in both the UK and USA.
In 2011, I was named a BAFTA Brit to Watch, recognising emerging British filmmaking talent. My professional work spans film, fashion film (advertising), stop motion and digital production, with a particular interest in visual storytelling and developing distinctive creative ideas.
I was previously a Senior Lecturer in Fashion and the Moving Image, Fashion Illustration and Course Leader for the MA Fashion Film & Digital Production at the University of the Arts London. As Course Leader, I designed and led an innovative postgraduate programme combining filmmaking, animation, fashion, emerging technologies and creative storytelling.
Alongside teaching, I have directed and developed creative projects and worked with leading industry and cultural partners, including NOWNESS, Panavision, BAFTA Albert and the V&A. I co-directed the UAL Future Fashion Film Festival, bringing together emerging filmmakers and industry professionals.
My teaching is practical, supportive and tailored to each student. I love helping people at any level discover their creative identity, understand what they're trying to say, research, develop ideas and gain the confidence and technical skills to bring their visions to life.
I work with aspiring filmmakers, animators, creatives, university applicants and anyone looking to develop their skills in cinematic storytelling. Whether you're starting from scratch, developing a portfolio or working towards a specific film or animation project, I can help you develop your ideas and help your projects evolve.

I can’t recommend Vicky highly enough. She was my teacher at college and played a huge part in helping me discover the film industry and opportunities for a career within it.
Since leaving college, I’ve stayed in touch with Vicky, and she has continued to mentor and support me throughout the years. Her guidance, encouragement, and genuine passion for helping others have had a lasting impact on my career.Vicky is an amazing mentor and teacher. She has the best energy and is my fave teacher I’ve ever had (for real). She’s incredibly knowledgeable, and I couldn’t have asked for any more from her.
I first met Vicky in 2016 during my time in education. She was always incredibly thorough going through my work, going above and beyond to help.
Vicky is able to be engaging and professional at the same time, twinned with her industry knowledge allows you to feel relaxed to share creative ideas/ innovations.
I would highly recommend Vicky, she is extremely passionate about her work and will always help you find a creative solution in complicated scenarios.Lessons with Vicky never felt overly formal, and I mean that in the best possible way. She created an environment where we could actually be ourselves, experiment, make mistakes, and figure things out. My two years with her were really special, not only because of how much I learned, but because of her quirky personality and loud, colourful presence.
I learned so much about filmmaking and the wider context around it, but what I appreciated most was how much she tried to give us experiences beyond the classroom. She organised trips outside of university, brought in special guests for talks and industry exposure, and even helped us put together our own festival. She genuinely wanted us to experience the industry and understand what exists beyond the university bubble.
Whoever gets Vicky as their tutor next is very lucky, because they’re in very good hands. I’ll always be grateful for the energy, encouragement, and honesty she brought to the two years I spent learning from her. She is genuinely not one of those tutors you come across randomly.
I had the pleasure of studying under Vicky during my MA Fashion Film and Digital Production at London College of Fashion, UAL, where she was our Course Leader. She is one of the most caring and dedicated teachers I have ever met.
Throughout the course, Vicky was always there to support us. She genuinely cared about every student and always tried her best to help us overcome difficulties, whether it was developing our ideas, improving our projects, or preparing for our final outcomes. She always made us feel supported and encouraged.
What I really appreciated about Vicky was her teaching style. She was very patient and approachable, and always explained things clearly from the basics to make sure everyone could follow. Her classes were practical and engaging, with many creative exercises that helped us understand concepts better and apply them to our own work.
Vicky created a very positive learning environment where we felt comfortable sharing ideas, experimenting, and growing as creatives. I’m very grateful for her guidance during my time at LCF and would highly recommend her as a teacher.During the MA Fashion, Film and Digital Production Program at the University of the Arts London, I genuinely learned a great deal. As we all know, this is a field heavily focused on practical production, so relatively speaking, my classmates and I were somewhat weaker in theoretical research. Not only did Vicky provide valuable advice throughout the filming process, but she also specifically organized tutoring sessions for us in the areas of theory and research proposal. She even created very clear and well-structured PowerPoint presentations to help us understand the importance of research. On the practical side, Vicky connected us with Nowness, providing access to cutting-edge industry resources and helping us secure numerous opportunities. Moreover, even after graduation, I have maintained frequent contact with Vicky. She is truly an energetic and supportive teacher who has had a lifelong impact on me. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to Vicky for her help during my master's studies!
I had the privilege of learning from Vicky at a formative stage in my development as a director, and her influence has stayed with me ever since.
With an internationally recognised career in filmmaking and creative education, Vicky brings an exceptional depth of professional experience to her mentoring. What makes her truly distinctive, however, is the way she wears that experience so lightly. She is never intimidating, dismissive or overly precious about ideas. Even the most unusual creative instinct is taken seriously, explored with curiosity, and shaped through precise, thoughtful guidance.
Learning from Vicky never feels dry or overly academic. She is warm, funny and incredibly sharp, and somehow manages to feel less like a distant “industry figure” and more like having an exceptionally experienced filmmaker friend who genuinely wants your work to become the best version of itself.
She never teaches creativity as a formula. Instead, she encourages you to understand why you are making an image, what you truly want to communicate, and how to develop a creative voice and visual language that are genuinely your own. Her feedback is rigorous, honest and highly perceptive, while always grounded in the realities of production.
Her mentorship sharpened the way I think about authorship, visual language and the responsibility of representation. She encouraged me to consider not only how an image functions aesthetically, but also whose experiences it makes visible and how those perspectives are articulated. That perspective continues to inform my practice today.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Vicky to anyone looking for intelligent, inspiring and genuinely transformative mentorship in filmmaking, visual storytelling or the development of their own creative practice.Vicky was my Course Leader for the MA Fashion Film and Digital Production programme at London College of Fashion. During the year and a half I studied with her, I learned a great deal from her, both creatively and professionally.
Vicky is an incredibly supportive, thoughtful and dedicated educator. She has a genuine passion for teaching and always makes an effort to understand each student's ideas and creative direction. Rather than simply telling you what to do, she encourages you to think independently, develop your own voice and find the best way to bring your ideas to life. Her feedback is always honest, practical and constructive, and she is extremely generous with her time and experience.
One experience that particularly stands out was a project I worked on in collaboration with NOWNESS. Throughout the development of the film, Vicky gave me a lot of valuable and practical advice, helping me refine both the concept and the execution. Her guidance gave me more confidence in my creative decisions and played an important role in pushing the project further. The film was eventually published on NOWNESS, which became a very meaningful milestone for me.
What I appreciate most about Vicky is how genuinely invested she is in her students. She cares about their growth and is always willing to support them in any way she can. I would highly recommend Vicky to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, inspiring and genuinely caring mentor in fashion film, digital production and creative filmmaking.
Vicky was my course leader during my MA in Fashion Film and Digital Production at the London College of Fashion from 2023-2025.
She is by far the most patient, knowledgeable, dedicated, caring, and approachable educator I have had the fortune to learn from. Her words still resonate with me and my practice.
She's the one person I could go to with anything from a single spark of an idea to the most detailed production schedule, and she'd still go through every single thing with a fine-toothed comb. Because of her vast experience, she always helped me improve.
She's not the kind of educator who'd stick you with a general bunch of lessons; she's the one who'd carefully understand your needs and goals and craft something unique so that you succeed. She'll be the one person cheering loudest in your corner.I have known Vicky since we met on the film festival circuit in 2010, where we bonded immediately over cinema and our frankly magnificent curly hair.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside her as a guest lecturer, running workshops and attending her students’ thesis presentations. Vicky is an exceptional educator: warm, enormously knowledgeable and blessed with a brilliant creative eye. Her students trust her, respect her opinion and, most importantly, she inspires them to be better filmmakers.
I had the pleasure of studying under Vicky on the MA Fashion Film and Digital Production course at UAL, where she was our Course Leader. Vicky is an exceptional mentor—knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuinely invested in the creative development of her students. Her experience as an NFTS directing graduate brought a unique perspective to our course, and her feedback always challenged me to think more critically and confidently about my own artistic practice. She has a wonderful ability to balance creative inspiration with practical industry advice. I wholeheartedly recommend Vicky to anyone looking for thoughtful portfolio reviews, creative mentoring, or support in developing their artistic practice and career!
Vicky is an incredibly knowledgeable, engaging and supportive tutor with extensive experience in creative production. I have worked alongside her for the past three and a half years and have always been impressed by her energy, organisation and commitment to her students.
She combines practical industry knowledge with an ability to encourage students to think outside the box, push beyond their comfort zones and develop ambitious ideas, while remaining realistic about what can be achieved within the practical constraints of a production. She helps students find creative solutions and turn their ideas into achievable outcomes. She is passionate about what she teaches and genuinely invested in helping her students develop and succeed.
I would highly recommend Vicky to other Superprof members looking for practical, inspiring and industry-focused guidance in production.Having worked alongside Vicky for a number of years, you won't find a teacher who is as caring, attentive, and knowledgeable about production as she is! She brings to the table an excellent balance of practical experience and conceptual teachings that benefit anyone under her tutelage.
I am writing to offer my unreserved and strongest possible recommendation for Vicky Mather.
During my seven years as a university course leader, I had the distinct privilege of working closely alongside Vicky. I can state without hesitation that she is one of the most exceptional educators and tutors I have encountered across my career in higher education.
Vicky possesses that rare combination of creative vision and pedagogical insight that truly inspires students to push beyond their perceived limits. She genuinely cares about her students, remaining deeply committed to their personal and academic achievements. Crucially, she understands that success in a creative field is not a one size fits all metric; she treats every student as an individual, tailoring her mentorship to help them realise their own unique voice and potential.
Higher education can often present a demanding and challenging environment, yet Vicky consistently proved to be a cornerstone of strength and innovation within our team. She brought imaginative solutions to complex problems and offered unwavering support to her colleagues. Her collaborative spirit, combined with her professional warmth, elevated the work of everyone around her.
I cannot think of anyone more deserving of my highest recommendation. Vicky Mather is an outstanding educator who will undoubtedly prove to be an invaluable credit to your institution.
Yours faithfully,
Ray Kilby

Vicky was my professor from 2020-2022. She helped me obtain my master's degree, and when all other areas of academia had previously turned their back on me, Vicky saw and nurtured my skill sets.
