About Arlo
I am an award-winning filmmaker, media artist, and international educator with over 20 years of experience at the intersection of creative practice and critical theory. My work is defined by a passion for 'Practice-as-Research', the belief that the most profound academic insights emerge when we rigorously test our creative ideas in the real world.
My professional journey has been truly global. Having lived and worked in seven different countries, I have held leadership roles including Head of Department and Head of School across Europe, Asia, and Africa. These experiences have taught me how to communicate complex ideas to diverse groups of students, from first-year undergraduates finding their voice to postgraduate researchers refining their final dissertations.
My teaching style is built on the foundation of a Master’s degree in Advanced Teaching and Instructional Design. I am deeply committed to student-centred learning, which means I don't just provide answers; I help you build the intellectual 'scaffold' you need to master your own work. Whether you are a student striving for excellence in a rigorous academic programme or a creative practitioner looking to translate your craft into a polished academic format, I provide the structure, feedback, and mentorship to help you reach your goals.
I am particularly skilled at supporting students from varied cultural backgrounds and those working in English as a second language (ESL), ensuring that every session is patient, inclusive, and tailored to your unique learning process. I believe that academic growth should be both intellectually challenging and deeply rewarding, and I look forward to helping you navigate your next project with confidence.

My Methodology and Approach
My teaching philosophy is rooted in "Practice-as-Research", the idea that the best way to master a subject is to bridge the gap between abstract critical theory and your own practical, creative output. My classes are not just about receiving information; they are about co-creating a roadmap for your academic or creative journey. I focus on developing your critical voice, refining your research methodology, and ensuring your structural analysis is as compelling as your creative ideas. Whether we are untangling a complex media theory, outlining a thesis, or concepting a design project, my approach is always collaborative, patient, and highly structured.
Typical Lesson Structure
I typically conduct sessions in 60-minute blocks, which allows enough time for deep-dive analysis, constructive feedback, and the setting of clear goals for your independent work. For dissertation or major project support, we can also arrange 90-minute sessions to accommodate more intensive structural reviews or multi-layered critique processes.
My Qualifications and Experience
I bring over 20 years of experience as an award-winning filmmaker, media artist, and international educator. Having lived and worked in seven countries, I have held leadership roles as a Head of Department and Head of School across Europe, Asia, and Africa. I hold an M.Ed. in Advanced Teaching with a focus on Instructional Design and Pedagogy, as well as an M.A. in Theatre, Film, and Television. This combination of high-level academic theory and decades of professional practice means I don’t just teach you the "rules" of media, I help you master the craft behind them.
Who These Lessons Are For
These sessions are specifically designed for university-level students (undergraduate and postgraduate) who are seeking high-level academic mentorship. I specialise in working with:
Students navigating Media Studies, Digital Communications, and Creative Arts.
Students tackling complex thesis or dissertation projects who need help with structure and narrative flow.
Creative practitioners (writers, designers, marketers) looking to ground their work in critical theory.
International students or those using English as a second language (ESL) who need clear, patient, and culturally aware academic support.
