About Richard

Economics is often seen as difficult, abstract or overly technical. My aim is to make it clear, useful and intellectually interesting.

I am a Professor of Economics at a UK university, with over 12 years’ experience teaching in universities and over 20 years’ experience as a tutor. I have taught students at A-level, undergraduate and postgraduate level, and I have worked with learners who need support with everything from core economic theory through to advanced quantitative methods, dissertation writing and research design.

My academic background includes a PhD in Economics, an MSc in Economics with Distinction, and a First Class degree in Economics. I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Alongside my university teaching, I have won a number of teaching awards, including student-led Golden Apple awards, a University Teaching Fellowship Award for Innovation, and a University Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Teaching.

I love teaching economics because it gives students a powerful way of thinking about the world. At its heart, economics is about choices, trade-offs, incentives and constraints. Once students become comfortable with that way of thinking, the subject becomes much more manageable — and often much more enjoyable.

My approach is supportive, structured and practical. I want students to understand the content, but I also want them to know how to use that understanding in exams, essays, problem sets, data work and dissertations.

My lessons are tailored to the student’s level, course, exam board and goals. Some students need help building confidence with the basics; others want to move from good to excellent. I adapt the lesson around what the student needs, while keeping a clear focus on understanding, structure and performance.

A-level Economics

For A-level students, I usually focus on three things.

First, we build secure knowledge of the content. This means understanding the core concepts, becoming comfortable with economic vocabulary, and learning how to apply ideas accurately to different contexts.

Second, we work on exam technique. Economics students often know more than their marks show. I help students structure answers clearly, use diagrams effectively, build chains of analysis, evaluate arguments, and manage time under exam conditions.

Third, I try to make economics feel more connected to the real world. Strong students do not just memorise definitions; they learn to think like economists. I help students develop the confidence to question assumptions, compare arguments and write more analytical answers.

University students

University economics can be challenging because every module has its own style, assumptions and expectations. I support students across areas such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic history, finance, financial economics, accounting, mathematics for economics, statistics and econometrics.

My university-level teaching is designed to find a shared language with the student. We start from what they understand, identify where the difficulty is, and then rebuild the topic step by step. This can involve working through lecture material, problem sets, readings, essay plans, past papers or feedback from tutors.

I can help with both the technical side of economics and the written side: understanding models, interpreting diagrams, explaining intuition, improving essay structure, developing arguments and writing in a more analytical academic style.

Data, econometrics, statistics and dissertations

I also work with students who need support with quantitative methods, research methods, dissertations and academic writing. This might include understanding regression output, developing a research question, choosing a method, interpreting results, improving structure, or making the argument of a dissertation clearer.

My aim is not just to help students complete a particular task, but to help them understand what they are doing and why it matters. Good data work and good academic writing both require clarity: a clear question, a clear method, clear evidence and a clear argument.

Whether the student is preparing for an A-level exam, trying to understand a difficult university module, or writing a dissertation, my lessons are calm, focused and practical.
