About GNG
I always tried to convince my student interns not to be a teacher, and if after hearing me they still wanted to be a teacher, well that was teacher material. Ask yourself, do you love people? Can you interact with an aggressive, rude, difficult student who has academic and behavioral issues who may not show one adaptive behavior for months, and when that student is adaptive not remember all the maladaptive behavior, and spontaneously affirm that student? Can you accept that whatever weakness you have will be obvious to your students, and they will call you on it? Can you shape students giving affirmation and consequences without personalizing your interactions always seeing the divinity in a child? Are you passionate about what you do? Can you do it without accolades from parents, or school administrators, or support from the public, and do you have the most important trait of any aspiring teacher— tenacity. Can you be effective, and consistent, making things work no matter what day after day? Can you accept the fact that with the required training, degrees, and certifications needed to qualify for this job, it will not be as well paid if you had the same credentials in other fields?
