About Katy
I’m a Children’s Nurse and PICU nurse, but I’m also someone who knows what it feels like when traditional ways of learning just don’t work for you. I have ADHD and dyslexia myself, so I’m definitely not the person who is going to tell you to “just read the textbook again” if something isn’t clicking!
I learn best by talking things through, making links to real clinical situations and understanding why something happens rather than simply memorising facts, and that has heavily influenced the way I teach.
I genuinely enjoy helping people reach the point where a complicated topic suddenly makes sense. I’m approachable, fairly informal and very happy for you to say “I still don’t get it” as many times as you need to. There are no silly questions.
I also won’t pretend to know absolutely everything. Critical care is huge, and if something is outside my knowledge or experience I’ll be honest about that rather than bluffing an answer. If it’s something relevant to your learning, I’m the kind of person who will go away, read around it properly and make sure I understand it inside out so I can explain it clearly next time.
Most importantly, I want sessions to feel useful and encouraging rather than like another lecture. You don’t need to arrive knowing loads already — that’s rather the point of tutoring.

My sessions are practical, supportive and tailored to what you actually need help with. I use an interactive, discussion-based approach rather than long lectures, with clinical scenarios, questioning, mock interviews and breaking complex topics down into manageable chunks.
Sessions are usually 60 minutes, although longer mock interview or revision sessions can be arranged where helpful.
Although sessions are flexible and can be adapted as we go, I ask that you send me a brief idea of the topics or areas you’d like to focus on beforehand. This allows me to make sure I have suitable examples, scenarios and resources ready so we can make the best use of your session.
I’m an NMC registered Children’s Nurse with a First Class Honours degree in Children’s Nursing and extensive experience in Paediatric Intensive Care, currently working at Band 6 level. I have also worked as a PICU Clinical Educator, teaching, supporting and assessing nurses and students in clinical practice.
My postgraduate study includes Level 7 Paediatric Intensive Care and Level 7 Neonatal Critical Care, with a distinction in Neonatal Critical Care. My specialist PICU experience includes caring for children requiring advanced therapies such as ECMO/ECLS and continuous renal replacement therapy (CVVH/RRT), alongside invasive ventilation and complex critical care.
Lessons are aimed mainly at student children’s nurses, newly qualified nurses and registered nurses wanting support with paediatric or critical care knowledge. I can also support nurses undertaking PICU specialist courses or Neonatal Critical Care in Practice programmes, helping to break down complex topics, work through clinical scenarios and apply theory to practice.
Sessions can cover clinical reasoning, paediatric A-E assessment, deterioration and escalation, ventilation, blood gases, haemodynamics, renal replacement therapy, ECMO concepts, prioritisation and other critical care topics within my area of experience.
I can also help with Band 5/6 interview preparation, mock interviews, OSCE style practice and developing confidence with clinical decision-making and prioritisation.
My aim is to help you understand why something happens and how to apply that knowledge clinically, rather than simply memorising information.
