About Becky

- What kind of experience do you have?

I studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire and whilst there I took pedagogy classes and undertook an educational project for my dissertation module, for which I gained a first. I took part in many master classes including Kristian Steenstrup, Ron Barron and Chris Houlding and use these experiences to inform my own teaching to get the best from my students.

I have performed professionally in the Cavern Club, Liverpool, the Vox Conference Centre, Birmingham, and been broadcast on BBC WM, as well as performing in many concert halls across the country. I am experienced in playing in a wide range of styles, which I try to inspire my students to explore.

My main specialism is trombone but I also play euphonium to a high level, having gained my grade 8 in 2004 and joining the National Youth Wind Orchestra a year later. I use this to inform my teaching of valved instruments, especially brass band instruments and I try to demonstrate and lead by example as often as I can with my students.

My teaching work is very varied and encompasses a wide range of settings. I teach across the Nottingham City network of schools, providing follow on small groups, grade work and whole class music. I have a lot of previous experience in wider opportunities having delivered brass and woodwind WO in Dudley and Coventry performing arts services. In Nottinghamshire I also work in secondary schools, providing one to one brass tuition, from beginner to grade 8 and running the brass ensemble. I also work in Kings High School, which is an independent girls school, where I am the specialist teacher of trombone, French horn and tuba. On Saturday mornings I am the trombone and tuba tutor at Birmingham Schools Concert Orchestra.

Earlier this year, my book, Music for Children, was published by Pavillion Books, which is an extension of my teaching ethos, where I introduce everything musical to children in a fun, interactive and approachable way.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes (september 2015)

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained at the Birmingham Conservatoire with Ed Jones of the CBSO, Bob Hughes (ex-LSO) I also studied Euphonium and Bass trumpet with Katrina Marzella (Black Dyke Brass Band) and David Purser respectively.
Before this I was a scholar on the Hampshire Specialist Music Course at Peter Symonds college, Winchester, where I studied with Dr, Cliff Bevan and Julian Poore.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My private students are preparing for graded exams and school and local ensemble auditions, and have been successful in Enderby Youth Band and Birmingham Schools Brass Band, Jazz Band and Wind Band. Recent successes have included grade 5 theory passes, grade 3 trombone with Merit, grade 1 trumpet with distinction and grade 4 tenor horn pass. This is a typical set of results.

I am Becky, a brass teacher living in the East Midlands and willing to travel.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

My specialisms are trombone, euphonium, music workshops and theory but I can teach all brass instruments and I am keen to get players started on their musical journeys. I can also teach recorder and piano to beginners or younger students. This is especially good for those not big enough or brass instruments yet, or to help along their musical knowledge and skills.

I also have a lot of experience in musical outreach and workshops, so can teach workshop skills or run workshops for groups of students.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire (BMus(hons)), where I studied trombone with Ed Jones (principal of the CBSO) and Bob Hughes (ex bass trombonist of the LSO). I have taken my Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in trombone performance.

I am grade 8 distinction on trombone and euphonium.

I have also undertaken Safeguarding children training (including WRAP and Prevent) and Data Protection training.

- How much do you charge?

Consultation lessons are half price for a full hour. I am also happy to meet to recommend an instrument for a student, and I have several instruments they can try.

Lessons are £26 per hour.

- Where do you teach?

I travel to my students' homes. I am based inMansfield but am willing to travel out to Chesterfield, Warsop, Nottingham and all the surrounding areas.

I can also teach from my home in Mansfield, located close to the M1.

- When are you available?

I aim to be a flexible as possible to fit the needs of my students. I can teach afternoons, evenings or weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I have a lot of experience teaching 7-18 year olds, but I am happy to teach adults too. I am happy to teach all abilities from beginner up to grade 8 on my specialisms. I will happily recommend tutors for ongoing students in disciplines which aren't my main areas of expertise.

I would not expect a child younger than 6 to be able to hold and play a brass instrument, but I would love to teach younger children music theory or music skills to compliment their other lessons e.g. piano.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I follow Trinity Guildhall or ABRSM graded exams, but only on the request of the student who wants a progressive challenge.

I am also a ABRSM music medals trained teacher-assesor.

I believe it is more important to get good groundings in technique, sound and musicality and grades should be an addition to this.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Music is fun and changes your life!

It's not easy, it takes talent and hard work, but the rewards are incredible and there are so many skills you can learn and use for the rest of your life.
