About Joseph
I've been playing in various Bristol-based bands since the end of that really fun time in 2020 that we no longer talk about. My main project, Eve Appleton Band, was the winner of the Green Man Rising competition in 2023 (it's a big deal ok!). My life has been dedicated to playing music for the last five years, and I can honestly say it's one of the most rewarding things a person can do with their time. Unfortunately, playing live shows doesn't exactly pay all the bills (shock horror), so I also work as a teaching assistant in a secondary school. I love working in education, but I'd like to slowly transition all my work to being purely music-related. So combining teaching and music seemed like the obvious next step for me!

I never learnt to play bass by reading music and reciting the same pieces over and over again, and I don't think you should have to either. Learning an instrument should be fun, and quite frankly, it's very hard to persist with something you don't actually enjoy. We all have enough arduous jobs to complete in our daily lives, there's no need to add another one. With bass, the most important skills to learn are familiarising yourself with the fretboard, locking in with the drums, and identifying and outlining the notes of various chords, so as to best add texture and colour to the music without treading on anyone else's toes. This will enable you to hear a song, either live or recorded, and instantly be able to play along like a professional. I strongly believe that all of this can be done without having to say the words "All Cows Eat Grass" even once. I first started learning guitar when I was 16, and within two years I had almost completely switched over to bass. I was encapsulated by how much more fun it was to feel completely locked in with the music, and to provide the essential foundations of a track. If you're a guitarist exploring bass for the first time, and looking for pointers on how to start playing like a "bassist" rather than a "guitarist stepping in on bass", I'll definitely be able to help you on the way. If you're just getting into bass, or have a reasonable understanding but want to know how to progress further, please also get in touch! I'm just starting out, so my lessons are currently £20 for an hour-long session, and this won't go up for people already signed up with me. All ages welcome!
