About Sergio

A 25-year-old friendly, empathetic tutor! Going into my 3rd year of a Bioengineering PhD. Moved to the UK at 8 years old and had a lot to catch up on! Spent many years as a tutee to some fantastic and patient individuals who greatly contributed to all my accomplishments today. I hold a B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry, M.Sc. by research in Biochemistry. I sincerely hope I can repay the good fortune I`ve had on to the next generation of brilliant youngsters. Feel free to drop me a message for a chat!
I excel at explaining complex subjects in a concise and clear manner. I`m a great communicator, and have won many prizes at conferences throughout my MSc and PhD. I have a review article accepted for publication in "Critical Reviews in Biotechnology", one of the top Biotechnology journals in the world. I have some informal experience in teaching through academic and industrial contacts. I`m a qualified STEM ambassador and hold a DBS check as part of my PhD scholarship, which required me to demonstrate to secondary school youngsters across the country. My hobbies include competitive video games. I used to be a professional eSports athlete, and coached many clients, friends and guests at a number of university societies in how to improve their skills at the game, which brought me great joy and satisfaction.

I am a first year PhD student studying for a Bioengineering degree at Lancaster University. Being born and raised in Romania until the age of 8, my background and subsequent transition into where I am today was made possible by the many mentors I have been fortunate to encounter. Teachers, parents, friends, supervisors, counsellors, role models, have all blessed me with a common kindness: To be understood. Without the many mentors I have crossed paths with, and the wisdom and guidance they have bestowed upon me, I would not be the kind of person I am today, and for that, I am eternally grateful to each and every one of them.
I fully believe being understood is the foundation for growth and personal development. As my mentors have inspired me, I believe it is my duty to help others the same way I myself was helped. There were brief periods during my college and undergraduate days where I was a chemistry mentor, helping new students better understand challenging material, as well as additional coaching in my spare time (see more in CV). The main reason I believe I would be fit for such a job comes down to experience and empathy; I feel I can relate very well to others and would be able to effectively listen and communicate ideas, feelings or concerns with kindness and compassion – as I myself was once in their shoes, and know exactly the sort of support that facilitated me to thrive.
In addition to having the opportunity to give back to others, I believe this experience would allow me to continue to develop myself as a person through the humble and spiritual teachings that come with mentorship. I have not recently had many opportunities to experience such a dynamic, but I truly hope this will be one of them.
Yours sincerely,
Sergiu Huleani
