About Shumina
Having studied mathematics at degree level, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for how powerful and rewarding the subject can be when it’s properly understood. However, I’ve also seen how easily students can lose confidence in maths if they don’t get the right support early on. That’s why I’m passionate about helping learners at GCSE level — it’s such a crucial stage where the right guidance can completely change a student’s attitude towards the subject. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to make maths feel clear, achievable, and even enjoyable. I enjoy breaking down complex ideas into simple, intuitive steps and showing students that there’s often more than one way to reach an answer. It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch a student’s confidence grow as they move from uncertainty to genuine understanding. Ultimately, I want to use my knowledge to make a difference — helping students not only achieve their target grades but also develop problem-solving skills and a positive mindset that will serve them well beyond their exams.

My approach as a maths tutor focuses on building understanding, confidence, and problem-solving skills rather than memorisation. I start by identifying each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style through diagnostic questions and open discussion. This helps me tailor lessons to their individual needs and pace. I believe that maths should feel logical and approachable, so I use step-by-step explanations to make abstract concepts clear. I encourage students to ask questions and think aloud. Practice is key, so I provide structured exercises that progress in difficulty, and into exam-style contexts. I also focus on exam techniques — such as time management, interpreting questions carefully, and showing full working — to help students perform at their best under pressure. Ultimately, my goal is to help students develop confidence and independence in maths, so they not only improve their grades but also enjoy the subject and feel empowered to tackle new challenges.
