About Kristina

About me

I've spent most of my working life somewhere in education, whether that's running English language schools, tutoring privately, or being a student myself, which I still am.

My own academic route was a broad one. I took a BSc in Business and Management, then went on to complete the GDL and LPC, the law conversion and legal practice courses. Law taught me to think precisely and defend an argument properly, and that discipline sits behind everything I teach. I'm currently studying nutrition, which has taken me through biomedicine, so I'm sitting on the same side of the desk as my students often enough to remember exactly what it feels like.

Alongside teaching I've co-founded and run businesses in health and property. That means when I teach business, I'm not only working from a textbook. I can tell you how the theory holds up once real money and real customers are involved.

What I care about most is that lessons are useful. I turn up prepared, I start and finish on time, and I'll tell you honestly what I think is working and what isn't. If I'm not the right person for what you need, I'd rather say so early than take your money.

I'm patient with students who find a subject difficult, and I'm particularly comfortable with people who've been out of education for a while and feel behind. Most of the time it isn't ability that's the problem. It's confidence and not having been taught the thing that everyone assumes you already know.

I'd be glad to hear what you're working towards.

About your lessons

How I teach
I start by asking what you actually want to achieve. Not "get better at the subject" but the real thing behind it: a specific grade, a place on a course, passing a resit, understanding a topic that's never made sense, or being able to hold your own in a meeting. Then we agree how we'll know we've got there, because a goal you can't measure is just a wish.

From there we're honest about what it will take, on both sides. What I'll bring, what you'll need to put in between lessons, and roughly how long it should realistically take. Then we build a plan and work to it.

We check progress against that plan as we go and adjust it when something isn't working. I'd rather change course early than keep going because it's what we agreed in week one. The goal is what matters, and results are the only real measure of whether the teaching is any good.

Lesson length
Usually 60 minutes. For heavier work such as applications, coursework or adult learners, 90 minutes gives us room to get properly into it.

My background
I hold a BSc in Business and Management and went on to complete the GDL and LPC. Legal training teaches you to think precisely, structure an argument and defend it under pressure, which is useful in almost every subject I teach. I'm currently studying nutrition, having covered biomedicine as part of the course, so the science I teach is material I'm working through and examined in myself. Alongside teaching I've co-founded and run businesses in health and property, and I've run English language schools and tutored from complete beginner through to degree level.

Who it's for

Students from around 11 upwards, adult learners, and anyone preparing a university application. I work well with nervous students and with people returning to study after years away. I'd rather go slowly and get the foundations solid than rush to look productive.
