About Jon

I help professionals develop the English skills they need to communicate confidently and effectively in international business.

My background combines practical commercial experience, English-language teaching and advanced academic research. I am a CELTA-qualified English-language teacher, and my professional experience includes business development in the international technology sector, where I engage with businesses and decision-makers across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. My work involves identifying business needs, building professional relationships, developing commercial conversations and explaining complex products and services clearly.

Alongside my commercial experience, I have taught English and Business English to learners with different needs and professional backgrounds. I understand that effective language learning requires more than memorising vocabulary and grammar: it involves developing the confidence and judgement to communicate appropriately in real situations.

I also hold a PhD in Politics and International Relations, an MSc in Strategic Studies and an MA in International Relations and East Asia. My academic background has involved researching complex international issues, evaluating evidence, constructing arguments and communicating ideas precisely. This experience is particularly relevant to professionals who need to explain complicated subjects, write clearly or contribute confidently to substantive discussions.

Having grown up and been educated in Germany and developed my career in an international environment, I bring a cross-cultural perspective to my teaching. As a native German speaker, I am especially well placed to help German-speaking professionals navigate the linguistic challenges of working in English, although I welcome learners from all language backgrounds.

This combination of experience allows me to approach Business English from several perspectives: as a language teacher, as someone with practical commercial experience, and as a researcher accustomed to communicating complex ideas. I tailor my lessons to each student's objectives, whether those involve everyday workplace communication, client relationships, presentations, negotiations or more demanding professional discussions.

English

My lessons are designed around your professional responsibilities and the situations in which you need English most. We begin by identifying your objectives and the areas where focused practice would make the greatest difference.

Depending on your needs, we can work on:

Meetings and discussions: Express opinions clearly, ask effective questions, contribute constructively and disagree diplomatically.

Presentations and pitching: Structure arguments, explain complex information, communicate benefits and deliver persuasive presentations.

Client communication and business development: Build rapport, identify client needs, ask insightful questions and communicate value convincingly.

Negotiations and difficult conversations: Make proposals, respond to objections, clarify expectations and handle sensitive discussions professionally.

Emails and business writing: Produce clear, concise correspondence with the appropriate tone and level of formality.

Fluency, pronunciation and accuracy: Speak more naturally, expand your professional vocabulary and improve grammatical precision.

International and cross-cultural communication: Adapt your communication to different audiences, work effectively across cultures and avoid misunderstandings.

Leadership and stakeholder communication: Explain decisions, present recommendations and communicate effectively with colleagues, clients and senior decision-makers.

Analytical and academic communication: Structure complex arguments, discuss specialised subjects, evaluate evidence and express nuanced ideas with greater precision.

Interviews and career progression: Prepare for interviews, networking and the communication demands of international roles.

Lessons combine conversation, structured language practice, realistic workplace scenarios and constructive feedback. Where useful, we can work with situations drawn directly from your professional life, such as an upcoming presentation, a client meeting, an important email or a challenging conversation.

I can also help you understand recurring language difficulties and express yourself more naturally in English. For German-speaking learners, my native knowledge of German can be particularly useful when explaining differences between German and English; for other learners, I adapt my explanations to their needs and existing knowledge.

My aim is to help you become a more effective communicator, not simply a more knowledgeable student of English. We will focus on practical improvements that you can apply directly in your working life, with lessons shaped around your individual goals and international professional environment.

Get in touch to tell me about your role, your current level of English and the situations in which you would like to communicate more confidently. I would be happy to discuss a suitable approach.
