I like to focus on the "why", on explaining the way we should think about mathematics that prepares students for the next step in their academic journey.
When we engage homework, when we review the study guide for an exam, students tend to create questions that reveal where in the instructional process they missed something, or where in the subject they're looking for more, for the thing that gives a subject relevance and vibrance. Many times, building up from the basics is all it takes to bring students up-to-speed with a course--refreshing their command of algebra as we solve a problem in Calculus, going over the dreaded unit-circle-values when we decompose a vector in statics.
Most lessons last an hour, but some work needs two or three. I've worked with some students in lessons exceeding ten hours, but these simply reflect their dedication to the team effort that is a successful tutoring session.
I've worked with students in course work from Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 through Multivariable Calculus (Stokes' Theorem!) and Ordinary Differential Equations (Laplace Transforms!), from high schools, colleges, and universities throughout Southern California.
