I feel it's important to emphasise understanding over wrote-learning of material. I will ensure that students understand why they're doing what they're doing which will help them to learn and be able to solve harder problems. Asking questions is very much encouraged.
I have been a UK maths trust mentor on the Olympiad Mentoring scheme (which I co-wrote) and have helped at training camps for selecting the UK maths team. Two of my mentees have gone on to attend UK maths team selection camps in Hungary and Cambridge. UK Maths Trust Mentor: Corresponded with 4 students across 2 years from the top 50 students in the UK providing them feedback on solutions, suggesting further reading and encouraging them to pursue their interest in maths. Two have gone on to attend UK maths selection camps.
School Volunteering: I have volunteered in schools for the past 2 years. My first placement involved helping at a weekly after-school revision class for students working toward their physics A level. This involved working through questions with students providing them feedback and explaining to them parts they didn’t understand fully. This year I helped primary school children complete projects building bug houses and bookends. I developed my skills explaining concepts to young children and motivating them to succeed.
