About Catherine

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught the Alexander Technique since 2005 and been teaching the recorder since 1995. I currently teach AT in the music department at Eton College and am Professor of the recorder at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
As a music tutor I have worked with all ages and abilities in a number of institutions from primary schools through to university and music colleges.
I am a freelance recorder player and have won a variety of awards with my two chamber groups The Flautadors and Concanentes. Recent professional engagements have included playing for Handel's Julius Caesar and Charpentier's Medea at the ENO, performing with the Retrospect Ensemble in Belgium, adjudicating in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and playing on the sound track for the film 'The Awakening'.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I completed my Alexander Technique training with Walter Carrington at the Constructive Teaching Centre in London and have continued further studies with John Nicholls, Elisabeth Walker, Jane Saunderson and Ilana Machover.

I completed postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama studying recorder with Pamela Thorby and baroque oboe with Gail Hennessey.
I received a BMus from the University of Hull where I regularly gave concerts in the Beverley Early Music Festival.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

The majority of my Alexander Technique students are young people, many of them musicians.
My current recorder students range from grade 1 through to those preparing for diplomas.

I am a professional recorder player and teacher of the Alexander Technique. My aim is to bring out the best in each individual and to foster a love of learning.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Alexander Technique
Recorders (all levels and instruments)
Music Theory and assistance with GCSE and A Level music work.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I completed the 3 year training course at the Constructive Teaching Centre in London to become an Alexander Technique teacher.
I hold a BMus (Hons) degree from the University of Hull, a teaching diploma from Trinity College of Music (LTCL) and I completed one year as a postgraduate at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
I recently became a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

- How much do you charge?

Alexander Technique lessons cost £45 per 40 minute lesson with a reduction for a block booking of 10 lessons.
Recorder lessons cost £45 for an hour and music theory lessons cost £40 per hour.

- Where do you teach?

I teach in Chiswick, West London.

- When are you available?

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Availability varies according to the time of the year and other projects that are taking place.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and levels taught.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

All graded recorder exams for ABRSM and Trinity as well as diploma level.
Music theory all grades.
