I'm pleased to announce the launch of my Silk Masterclass: Kimono Edition workshop. If you or someone you know has always dreamt of becoming a fashion designer but never really had the support, skills or guidance to achieve this dream, then I'm here at your service.
I have created a two-day workshop spread over two weeks, I will be teaching six lucky students the art of making your own kimono using sliky fabrics. I will also uncover my journey from making clothes for my mother 10 years ago to working with high profile musicians like Mercury and Brit-nominated singer song writer Nao, The Voice UK 2018 winner, Ruti, The Chic, BBC's Jools Holland and ITV's The Voice UK and many more.
I will be uncovering the skills required to firstly make your own kimono that you can wear over and over again but also the mindset required to develop your brand and run a thriving business.
Places are limited so book today! I look forward to exposing you to a world of endless possibilities.
My name is Joyce Addai-Davis and for the past 10 years I’ve been developing my own fashion brand called AVD London, and in the last year I have developed my own sewing academy called Alpha Female Academy, where my sole purpose is to give value through education, personal development, and creating free radical fashion designers makers like myself.
In 2008, I graduated as a woven textile designer from Chelsea College of Art and Design after completing a diploma in surface design at the world-renowned school, Central Saint Martins. The opportunities I had as a young black female was unprecedented, each year they came flooding in; I studied at Polimoda school of fashion in Florence, then worked for the Thai Royal family in Thailand as a fashion textile designer which was a surreal opportunity.
Although the knowledge I accumulated over time allowed me to become an expert in my field of textile design, my career life completely changed when I met my guru Maria Fidalgo! At the time we met she was 75 years old and had been working as a couturiére (dress maker sewing clothes at a high level) for over 40 years. With Maria’s love and support my technical ability when it came to pattern cutting and design soared… In the first two months of training I made a blouse pattern which was a blueprint of my body (meaning I could now make 100 different tops and they would all fit me seamlessly). From making tops I quickly progressed to skirts then dresses.
I decided I needed a new challenge so I made my mother an off-shoulder top that fitted her like a glove and then made her 50th birthday dress which she wore with pride. I felt the more I created the better I got, clothes would take me a month to make then I noticed my speed increased from one month to two weeks to now only taking me just three days to cut and sew a three-piece outfit. I never thought I would get to be the preferred fashion designer for high profile musicians like Nao, Mercury and Brit nominated singer-songwriter and Ruti, The Voice UK 2018 winner and many others. My clothes have been seen on BBC2’s Jools Holland, ITV’s The Voice UK and BBC4’s Mercury prize and many over thirty-three concerts and festivals, my most breathtaking moment was when Nao performed at Afropunk in New York. That’s when I realised I mastered my craft and decided I want to pass it on!
