About Daniel
Hi, I'm Daniel. I'm 32 years old and due to start my PHD studies at Newcastle University in September 2019.
I have just returned from Madrid, Spain, where I was an English teacher in an academy for 18 months. I'm now looking forward to dividing my time between private tuition in the subjects of English Literature, History and Politics. I have nearly three years experience of both classroom based and online teaching, working with students of all ages, from children as young as 5 to adults. I have extensive experience in preparing students for the Cambridge First and Advanced exams as well as other areas of exam prep.
After graduating from Salford University with a BA in the History of Film,TV+Radio I graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2012 with a Masters (MLitt) in European Studies: Languages, Cultures and Societies. The course was interdisciplinary in nature, enabling me to specialise in European history, cultural studies and politics. My thesis focused on the poetry and letters of William Blake with particular focus on their influence on libertarian socialism. Other areas of historical specialisation include The Spanish, English and Irish Civil Wars and the Northern Irish Troubles, political theory and the history of film and popular music.
I have previously worked as a journalist, writing criticism and reviews for websites and publications such as The Quietus, Rock A Rolla Magazine, Clash Magazine and Dancehall: A Journal of Music and Sound.
Some further background:
After initially being accepted onto a PHD course at Durham University, I instead decided to take a year out and travel, teaching English abroad in Spain and Italy on the strength of my Masters. I enjoyed it so much I became a full time EFL teacher and two years ago I received my CELTA TEFL qualification from International House in Newcastle, one of the most internationally recognised qualifications in the field.
I have been working as a self employed private tutor of history, English and politics, as well as a part time language school teacher since 2014. I returned to Spain in 2017, working in a language academy in Madrid and continuing to offer private tuition in English and History on an online basis for English speaking students. This September I will be starting my PHD studies at Newcastle University.

My approach to teaching is heavily centred around the specific needs of each students. I reject a "one size fits all" approach and instead try and engage my students by making subjects that may initially seem detached from their everyday life and experience relevant to them. When teaching history and politics, I try and emphasise the stories of everyday people and relate them to the experience of my student to make them relevant.
When teaching English as a foreign language, my approach is heavily centred around widening students vocabulary and allowing them to understand the cultural and social processes that inform grammar and pronunciation. My lessons are often discussion based, including games, activities, multimedia and a wide range of texts from different sources as reading material.
My lessons are structured and methodical but also allow room for students to discuss and debate the issues at hand, an essential skill in all the subjects I cover and one that will enhance their critical thinking skills.
