About Margaret
Currently, I work with high school students (ages 14-19) who are recent arrivals to the United States. I teach basic English skills as well as help them to understand their content classes (history, science, and mathematics). As they progress in their education, I help them prepare for the state exams which are required for graduation. The goal for these students is to attain the English necessary to successfully attend a four year university.
In previous positions, I have worked with older students (18-21) who had considered leaving school but were giving it one last chance. These students had to pass the same state exams, but as older students, they often had to juggle work and family responsibilities as well. Many of these students were able to graduate and continue their educations at the university level.
Prior to this, I worked in Ecuador and Mexico teaching English as a Foreign language to both elementary school children as well as adults. The children were learning the language for future endeavors, while the adults were attempting to get jobs in the highly active tourism sector. Watching a student move from only the basics to being able to get a secure job in a hotel, restaurant or with an airline was extremely rewarding!

After over 15 years of teaching high school students and adults in the United States and abroad, I have learned that the first step in creating private lessons is keeping in mind the goals of the student. My classes vary from highly structured writing or test preparation to conversation and professional language. My greatest successes have been with students who have learned the basics of English but need help with details that will allow them to leap forward in their educational or professional lives.
I have a bachelor's degree in Anthropology, which helps me to work seamlessly with students from around the world. My Master's degree in TESOL has allowed me to become a certified teacher in New York. I also hold an Administrative license, which allows me to train other teachers to work with students learning English. Let's work together to help you succeed!
